Abstract

This paper analyses the results from a survey of a journal-writing class project undertaken with EFL university students. The project involved 153 1st year students enrolled at two different universities, across a number of departments, in central Japan. The paper briefly outlines the reasons for the inclusion of such a project within EFL classes. Students were administered a questionnaire at the end of the project to assess their attitudes towards a number of criteria including: level of interest, cultural awareness, computer awareness and reading. Results showed the majority of students enjoyed having participated in the project. Of interest was the fact that students had not completed a similar exercise in high school. Of the students surveyed, more than half indicated they had gained some new knowledge about using computers, sending email and photos via email. Unedited extracts from the students’ journals are also provided to give some insight into the level of enthusiasm with which students approached this project.
