Teacher trainers
Until recently, the inclusion of specific
training in gifted and talented education for trainee teachers has
been limited to relatively few institutions. In line with the increasing
focus on providing for able, gifted and talented pupils in mainstream
classrooms, however, there is growing interest in integrating this
topic into initial teacher training as well as teachers’ continuing
professional development.
| The Training
and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) commissioned Westminster
Institute of Education to produce a briefing paper on this
subject for providers of initial teacher training. The Agency’s
intention was to disseminate effective practice and research
findings to inform the work of Initial Teacher Training tutors.
This paper: |
- outlines the context to the focus on meeting the needs
of able, gifted and talented pupils in the Qualified Teacher
Status (QTS) Standards
- describes key principles in recognising and providing
for such pupils, and
- proposes some possible models for incorporating approaches
to teaching such pupils into ITT programmes.

it helpful to learn about the background and rationale of
the current emphasis on able, gifted and talented learners
by consulting the introduction to the Excellence
in Cities National Development Programme. In addition,
you will find discussions of the key issues for professional
educators in the units of professional
