This study of children’s learning
of early addition considers one teacher teaching mathematics
to her class of 4 to 6 year old children who have had little
previous formal schooling. This mathematics classroom is shown
as a place where the children work together participating
at their own level, building on the contributions of others,
developing a shared understanding of the mental and physical
mathematical resources used, and beginning to see themselves
as able mathematicians.

Analysis of classroom
observations of young children learning addition has identified
a variety of representations used by both teacher and children
to communicate mathematics. One of these representation is
categorised as ‘real world scripts’. This paper
considers the characteristics of such scripts and the role
they play in enabling children’s learning. The reasons
for this will then be discussed with reference to the use
of narrative as a means of learning.
