Linking teaching and research

One of the most contentious and arguably most important issues in higher education is the relationship between teaching and research. For Oxford Brookes this has added importance in that it was previously, as a polytechnic, little funded for research. Since around 1995 I have been involved in these projects

• With colleagues in psychology - in particular Roger Lindsay and Rosanna Breen (now at Cambridge University) we have researched student perceptions of staff research.
  
• With Roger Zetter and Bridget Durning in Planning. We have a three year FDTL project on Linking teaching and research in Built Environment Disciplines and have just published a booklet entitled Linking Teaching and Research in Departments
  
• I am director for the Generic Centre/LTSN Network of a national project on 'Linking teaching and research in the Disciplines'.
  
• Within Brookes the above initiatives have supported an institutional commitment to link teaching and research - in particular through the redesign of courses in the context of semesterisation.
