Young people's participation in the research process Dr Joe Harkin

The voices of learners should be heard in educational research, including those of young people and the marginalized. Research may take the views of learners as the essential starting point to consider what we mean by effective teaching and effective learning. In the Communication Styles project, learners took part with their teachers in articulating what is effective teaching in different contexts, through the use of a Communication Styles questionnaire. In the Socrates European Student Constructs project, 17 year old students in six countries articulated what they mean informally by a "good" teacher, through the use of Construct elicitation. In current work, 14-16 year old learners in English Further Education will articulate their learning needs, through the use of focus group discussions in six different colleges.

Children expressing their views through taking photographs

Dr Laura Davison

Sponsored by ESRC and Kodak.

Photography is an important medium for communication and representation that is increasingly within the reach of children. Understanding how children develop competence in and knowledge of photography is, therefore, an important challenge for developmental psychology. The attached paper reports an exploratory study of children of ages 7 – 15 years, using cameras and talking about their photographs. The results 1) identify some of the distinctive features of children’s photography at different ages, 2) establish some functions of their image making, and, 3) set up some hypotheses about the development of both competence in taking photographs and understanding of photographic images (The Development of Children as Photographers pdf file). There is also a website devoted to the research at Kodak project - children as photographers and teachers might find this part of it especially useful Kodak project - useful links as it contains links and a downloadable version of the education resource pack.
