Continue along the riverside path
On your right, just before the arched footbridge (1884) which crosses the mouth of the Cherwell and leads to the Oxford University Colleges' Boat Clubs, note the sluice gate from the ditch which drains Christ Church Meadows. This emphasises that the river embankment along which you have been walking for 800 metres may prevent frequent flooding of the Meadows, but should an exceptional flood overflow the embankment (or should the Meadows suffer exceptional rainfall) there needs to be a way of transferring the water back to the river}
