Deal with Spam in Google Mail

Brookes Computer Services have proactively been helping users deal with spam and junk email messages for some time. Through the use of server side checks, message flagging and encouraging users to use filters to manage messages and offering advice spam has become manageable for many. However, it has usually relied on the user configuring their email client, or WebMail, to take advantage of these steps. Google@Brookes Mail has built in spam filters and the powerful Google spam engine meaning that everyone gets the benefit of these technologies without having to do anything.mail

Every Google@Brookes Mail account comes with a Spam folder and spam filtering setup automatically. Incoming messages are analysed and if found to be spam they have the 'Inbox' label removed and are added to the Spam section.

View Spam messages

You can access your Spam section by clicking on Spam in your labels list on the left hand side of the Mail window. If you cannot see 'Spam' it may be under the '{number} more' link.

Sometimes real messages are erroneously labelled as Spam, so called 'false positives', so you should check your Spam section on a regular basis. Spam messages that are more than 30 days old are automatically deleted.

 

Mark message as not Spam

If a real message has been marked as spam you can view your Spam section and tick the box next to the message and click the 'Not spam' button. The message will be removed from the Spam section and returned to your Inbox view.

Delete spam messages

If you wish to delete spam messages prior to the 30 day automatic deletion, for instance of you have checked for false positives and wish to clear them, you can click the 'Delete all spam messages now' link.

Mark messages as spam

Occasionally spam messages are not caught and flagged by the Google scanners. You can mark messages as Spam which will remove them from you Inbox view and place them in the Spam section. In addition this will help to 'teach' Google's scanners about the message and will help it mark similar messages in the future as spam. To mark a message as spam select the message and click the 'Report spam' button. The message will be removed from the Inbox view and added to the Spam section.
