New to Brookes? Discover the Headington Library.
Headington Library will be running guided induction tours in Week 0 and 1.
All new students (and staff ) are welcome to join a tour : just sign up
in advance on the sign-up sheets which will be available inside the
Library entrance. Please do sign-up and find out how to get the most
out of your library service.
Tours will include where things are located in the Library, how to
borrow and return books, how to renew books (both on and off-campus) and
a short demonstration of the Library Catalogue. Tours will run:
- 3 times a day on Thursday 29th January & Friday 30th January (Week 0)
- 4 times a day during the week starting Monday 2nd February (Week 1).
In addition, a self-guided audio tour of the Library is available for
those students unable to take a guided tour or who prefer to go round on
their own. The audio tour can be downloaded from the Library web pages
at http://www.brookes.ac.uk/library/tours-audio.html or you can borrow an MP3 player from the Enquiry Desk with the audio tour preloaded and ready to go.
Tell us what you think of the Audio Tour and you could win £20 to spend
in Blackwells!
We'd like more feedback from students on the Headington Library audio
tour - is it easy to use? Does it make sense? Is it useful?
If you take the audio tour between Week 0 and the end of Week 2, fill in
an evaluation form (available from the Enquiry Desk or from the Audio
Tours web page) and write your name and student number on the form, we
will enter you in a prize draw to win a £20 Blackwells voucher.
Plus your feedback will help us make the audio tour better for next year.
- so why not?

Read Book project. This student-led project is backed by the award winning charity READ International. READ International comprises multiple student-led projects located at universities across the UK and one small central office. Our projects are run end-to-end by student volunteers. In return for their time and effort, our volunteers develop an array of skills in leadership, organisational development, financial management, and community networking.
So what is the Book Project?
Why? Tanzania follow a school syllabus very similar to that in the UK, however secondary schools in Tanzanian often go without any books. The UK government provides budget for new school textbooks year on year – this makes for good quality, relevant and up-to-date textbooks filling up school store rooms or ending up in landfill. Since our formation we have grown from one, to seventeen projects across the UK, and we won Best New Charity in 2007.
You can get involved at all levels: - fundraising, contacting organisations, giving school presentations, and thinking up ideas to raise the money needed to make it all happen. A group of students will also be needed to distribute everything in Tanzania!
This year, Oxford will be one of the three projects who will expand by adding the School Project to their activities. Volunteers will be able to go into schools to give workshops on issues of global citizenship and education. This project is run in partnership with Oxfam who will train volunteers in giving those workshops.
In OXFORD, we are looking for Volunteers and Project Leaders to take this amazing project forward. Last year, our volunteers send over 30,000 textbooks to Tanzania and 5 of them went out to Tanzania with 60 other volunteers from around the country!

This study aims to develop a questionnaire to measure Identity and its relationship with psychological distress. Anyone, aged 16 years and over can take part. As mentioned, taking part will give you the chance to be entered into a prize draw in which there are cash prizes of up to £100 each. If you have any additional questions, there is an 'Information Sheet' link on the website. You are welcome to forward these details to anyone, aged 16 years and over, who might be interested to complete the online questionnaire too. Participants needed for email based eating disorder study. Researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London are looking for volunteers aged 18 and over to take part in an email-based UK wide research study. Participation would be entirely by email and would be confidential. You are under no obligation to reply to this email, however if you choose to, participation in this research is voluntary and you may withdraw at anytime. We are looking for people who are experiencing eating difficulties such as binge eating and vomiting (or other behaviours aimed at controlling weight). The study aims to investigate the effects of therapeutic writing on mood and eating behaviours. Taking part would involve completing a 20 minute writing task on 3 consecutive days, as well as completing questionnaires at the start of the study, after 4 weeks, and again after 8 weeks (the questionnaires should not take more than 30 minutes to complete each time). You would be compensated for your time and inconvenience. Approved by King's College London Research Ethics Committee (REC) (KCL REC No. CREC/06/07-131). If you are interested, please email Olwyn Johnston on Olwyn.Johnston@iop.kcl.ac.uk (or phone 02078480224) for more information.
