Newsflash: Electrical shutdown at Gipsy Lane campus (week ending Vac 15) - no Brookes PC network available


Please be aware that the following buildings will be closed for all access to staff and students due to critical works that require total electrical shutdown.

  • Sinclair
  • Gibbs
  • Fuller
  • Main Hall
  • John Payne
  • Birch House

There will be no power at all in these buildings for the duration.  The buildings will be closed and locked down at 2030hrs on Friday 31st August 2012 and reopened at 0700hrs on Monday 3rd September.  The Abercrombie building will be accessible to those who have authorised access through swipe card on the West End entrance.

We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this closedown may cause however it is essential that this critical work is carried out at this time.   It would be helpful if staff in these areas could remember to disconnect their PC's and other appliances from sockets beforehand as this will help to avoid problems when the power is restored.

If you need to use a Brookes PC to do some work over the weekend they will available to use at Wheatley - G104, G105 and G105a and Harcourt Hill - FLG01a, FLG01b and FLG02.

Healthy volunteers needed for anxiety drug study. Healthy volunteers are required for a study investigating the effects of the anxiety treatment diazepam on the processing of emotions. Are you interested in participating in a brain imaging study on pain? Are you healthy, male, and at least 18 years old?
Then we invite you to participate in our experiment that will take 2 hours. During your visit we will measure your brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while you perform a computer task in which brief electrical stimuli will be administered.

OBIS (Oxford Brookes Information Solutions) News

Compulsory password changes to some student and staff accounts. Due to important improvements in the OBIS security policy, and changes mandated by Google, it has been identified that a number of staff and student accounts have been found to have passwords which are too short, that is they are less than eight characters in length.

Overall this will be of benefit to you because your account will be more secure with a stronger password. An ideal password is long and has letters, punctuation, symbols, and numbers. The greater the variety of characters in a password, the better. Also don't use the same password for everything. It is also very important to frequently change passwords for extra security.
The deadline for resetting your passwords will be Tuesday 31st July 2012. After this time we will automatically update passwords for any accounts which still have non-compliant passwords.

To change your password yourself log into your PIP page and select the "My Settings" tab and select "Change Portal Password", then follow the instructions as shown on the page.

After the automatic password reset, affected users will have to collect a new password before being able to login to any of the Brookes accounts, from any of the Service Desks. See link below for locations and availability of the Service Desks: http://obis.brookes.ac.uk/helpandsupport.html

When your laptop asks you for your login details to access wireless (Eduroam) you MUST type in your whole email address for the User Name, ie 012345678@brookes.ac.uk. Looking for a PC to use on the Gipsy Lane campus but can't find one? There are over 300 PCs in the 10 computer rooms around the Gipsy Lane campus for you to use. This number does not include 139 PCs in Headington Library on various floors. Why not go to room FHG06. You can find this room next to the Brookes Restaurant, opposite the bus stop. The alternative entrance to the room is to the right of the Post Room. Or try one of the Birch House computer rooms, opposite the front of the Tonge Building. New pilot Chromebooks service at Wheatley. Can't find a free computer in the Wheatley Library? You can now borrow a Chromebook from the Library counter. Chromebooks are basic laptops which work on the Eduroam network. They run Google applications and can be used for email, internet searching, accessing the VLE and searching library electronic resources. They don't have Microsoft Office, give access to documents stored on University drives or enable you to print, and at the moment they are for Library use only. Personalise your Google email address. All students are able to use a personalised email address. The email address is generated automatically from data on the Student Administration System and is in the format of firstname.lastname-nnnn@brookes.ac.uk where 'nnnn' is the year of enrolment. By default the address is not live and has to be activated by you, before it can be used. It will only appear in the Google Contact list once it is active.
You can activate your address, by logging to PIP and clicking on the "Maintain Email Alias" link on the "My Settings" tab. Activation can take up to 24 hours. You can also de-activate your address if you no longer wish to use it. However, if that is done and mail is sent to your personalised email address, it will be returned to the sender as undeliverable mail...created 29/09/11

Warning - working on email attachments. If you send yourself a file (your work) as an email attachment, make sure that you save it to your home directory on the H: drive (My Documents) or a memory stick and do NOT simply click and open the file. If you do open the file and continue saving without saving to your Home Directory or memory stick, the file will by default be saved to a temporary area which will be wiped once you log off the computer. There is no way this file can be restored so please be very careful ...updated 5/01/11

Please log off the computer room PCs before you leave. You must log off the computer room PCs before you leave the room and never leave them logged on to "reserve" them. We have had cases reported of other users using "logged on" PCs to print their work. This is irresponsible behaviour by both parties, Brookes accepts no responsibility for any loss to a user consequent upon a failure to log out correctly at the end of a session, this includes funds from your Charge Account ...updated 5/05/11

Reporting faults at the weekend. If you encounter any urgent PC network problems during the weekend, please notify weekend_faults@brookes.ac.uk. Give specific details, including any error messages. Please note that we will only attend to system/server problems such as multiple users unable to access home directories, applications software, or the internet, but we will not reply to your emails. We can not guarantee that problems will be fixed immediately but we will aim to restore services as soon as possible .
