How your institution can contribute to the resource guide

The purpose of this guide is to offer support to higher education institutions to develop good practice in managing staff age diversity. The approaches that institutions will take to successfully manage staff age diversity will inevitably be shaped by their institutional context and human resource strategies. Thus, this guide has been devised to offer Human Resources and Equality and Diversity Practitioners in the HE (Higher Education) sector, the opportunity to share a range of examples of policies and practices to implement the Age Regulations, and to develop age neutral policies and initiatives to recruit, retain and support employees across the whole age profile.

A series of examples have been drawn from across the HE sector in the UK and from other countries, including the United States and Finland. Examples from other employment sectors are also included to provide a bank of resources for universities to draw upon to shape their own institutional best practice in this area. Also included are some individual case studies. In an attempt to offer a comprehensive package of useful resources, the guide also includes web links to other relevant documentation. The guide was developed by Caroline Moughton, with the assistance of Alison Hunt. Dr Lucy Vickers contributed the legal material. Many thanks to Alison and other people who contributed examples and case studies or reviewed the text.

Effective practice in managing age diversity in the higher education sector is continuing to emerge. The guide was designed as a web-based resource that could capture developing and innovatory practice. If you have further examples to contribute please contact Dr Simonetta Manfredi, at the Centre for Diversity Policy Research and Practice: smanfredi@brookes.ac.uk, Tel: 01865 483843.
