Libraries and Learning Support

From the very start of your course at Oxford Brookes you will want to make use of the wide range of services offered through our Library.

Whether you are preparing your first presentation or completing your final dissertation the resources of the Library service, and particularly our team of friendly, specialist staff, are there to support your learning.

During the first weeks after you arrive in Oxford introductory tours are offered to help you get to grips with the basics of using our Library. Later on there will be opportunities to learn more about the specialised information sources most relevant to the in-depth project work and independent study that will feature prominently throughout your course.

Our Subject Librarians work closely with the teaching staff to ensure that the materials you will need are available. They can give you advice on the most appropriate sources of information to tap into and will help you make the best and most efficient use of the CD ROM databases and other resources on offer.

Many of the key texts that you will need to borrow are available through our four hour, twenty-four hour and one week loan services. As well as basic texts and books for background reading (and you'll find over a quarter of a million of them!) you will have access to a wide selection of professional, news and academic journals, giving you up-to-date and detailed information. Slides, videos and cassettes are included in our stock, as well as reference books, company reports, statistics, standards, maps, posters, music scores, past exam papers . . . and much, much more.

The two main libraries at the Gipsy Lane Campus and at Wheatley (specialising in Business and Education) are open seven days a week during term time and there are always staff on hand to help you. Dorset House Library is our third site (covering Occupational Therapy). Our computerised catalogue brings together details of the books and journals in our combined stock, and if someone else has the book you want it can be reserved and will be kept by for you as soon as it comes back.

No Library contains everything that's published nowadays, but using our Inter-library Loan Service we can borrow materials for you from other libraries in the UK and worldwide!

Photocopying facilities are available, including colour copying. And when you really need to get down to work, as well as providing areas for quiet and silent study, we also have individual study carrels and a group study room that can be booked for your use.
