Greg Benfield

Educational Development Consultant

Greg is from Melbourne, Australia, where he gained a wide experience of teaching Mathematics in the secondary, TAFE (Technical and Further Education) and Higher Education sectors. In 1997 Greg joined RMIT University, Melbourne, where he co-ordinated Maths/Science academic support for the RMIT Learning Skills Unit and was a Learning Technology Mentor for RMIT's Faculty of Education, Language and Community Service. He taught the graduate education subject, 'Teaching and Learning Online', delivered in online distance learning mode.

Greg joined OCSLD in January 2001. His work focuses on supporting e-learning and he is a tutor on the Postgraduate Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education. He is a Fellow of the Assessment Standards Knowledge exchange (ASKe). As well as his work at Brookes he delivers national workshops on e-learning and assessment and has been involved in a range of national JISC and Higher Education Academy e-learning projects. His research interests are:

Claire Burgess

Staff Development Consultant

Claire joined OCSLD in November 2009 from a consultancy background where she worked as an Occupational Psychologist with a number of private and public sector clients. She has also worked as a teacher in the Secondary education sector, teaching English to 11-18 year olds as well as adults. As an Occupational Psychologist, Claire has focused on improvements in the recruitment, retention and development of staff, as well as management development. This has been through initiatives such as the development of competency frameworks, employee engagement and motivation strategies, creating bespoke training, and assessment using psychometric tests. She also has a keen interest in positive psychology and the effect it can have on people throughout the workplace.

Claire is a member of the British Psychological Society and on their Register of Competence in Occupational Testing, as well as qualified to administer and feedback a number of psychometric tests for both individuals and teams.

Claire has joint responsibility within the team for leadership and management development.

Caroline Coultas

Sales and Marketing Manager/Project Finance Officer

Caroline joined OCSLD in April 2009. Caroline was previously working for RPS, an environmental consultancy where she was Secretary to the Archaeologists in the Oxford Office and also undertook responsibility for finance on large projects as well as assisting project managers on the smaller projects in the office.

Working full-time, Caroline’s role is divided between Sales and Marketing Manager for OCSLD, Project Finance Officer, assisting Lynn Farrell with the finances for the HR directorate, and the administration for Senior Staff Development Programmes.

Neil Currant

Educational Development Consultant

Neil Currant is an Educational Development Consultant in OCSLD. Neil is involved in the development and dissemination of good practice and innovation in learning, teaching and assessment across the University. He works on the PGCert (PCTHE) programme and Associate Teachers course.

Neil has previously been involved in research on electronic portfolios and their use to support learning, reflection and learner autonomy. He has also been involved in researching social learning through the use of web 2.0 tools and technologies. His interests include lifelong learning, personal development planning, reflective writing, assessment and feedback.

Neil is a qualified teacher and trainer and previously worked at the University of Salford and University of Bradford as an educational developer and lecturer in Training and Development.

Rosemary Davies

Staff Development Consultant

Rosemary joined Brookes in January 2006 from the NHS, where she held a consultancy role giving advice on training and development matters, designing and delivering management development modules, one-to-one coaching, and managing specific projects.  She also undertook a secondment  within the NHS Corporate University,  NHSU, working across 28 NHS Trusts in the Thames Valley to support the National Agenda and inflence and develop collaborative work with partner organisations.

At Brookes Rosemary's areas of special interest include, NLP, coaching, working closely with her link Directorates to support development alongside leading the University to achieving Investors in People Gold Award in 2011.  She has recently led on a HEFCE funded project working with University of Northumbria, Newcastle Business School and UCL to produce an Evaluation Tool Kit for Staff Learning and Development in Higher Education.

Rosemary is the link staff developer for the Directorates of Estates and Facilities Management and Learning Resources.  She also takes lead responsibility for Personal Development Review, (PDR), Investors in People across the University and the Brookes Mentoring Scheme.

Rosemary  is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development an ILM qualified coach and an NLP Business Practitioner.

Mary Deane

Educational Development Consultant

Mary joined Brookes in September 2011.  Her specialisms include teaching writing in disciplinary contexts, promoting research and publication, enhancing curricula, and internationalisation in HE.  She provides consultancy in these areas, and supervises doctoral work in the fields of academic writing, educational research, and literary studies.

Mary is the Chair of the research ‘Centre for International Curriculum Inquiry and Networking’ (CICIN).  Her recent publications include Writing in the Disciplines (2011), Academic Research, Writing, and Referencing (2010), and Critical Thinking and Analysis (2010).  Mary teaches on the Postgraduate Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education (PCTHE) and the Associate Teachers (AT) course.  She was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award in 2008, and is an Executive Board Member of the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) and the European Writing Centers Association (EWCA).

Frances Deepwell

Educational Development Consultant

Frances joined OCSLD as an educational development consultant in 2008. Her responsibilities include the development of a continuing professional development framework to support learning and teaching. Within this broad brief, she is editor of teaching news, co-convenor of the Minerva Forum, key contact for the National Teaching Fellowship and Brookes Teaching Fellowship schemes and course leader of the Associate Teachers course. She is also a tutor on the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education.

She has a first degree in German Studies from University of Manchester, a Masters from the University of Kent and a PhD (by publication) from Coventry University in 2008, on the implementation and evaluation of e-learning. She has worked and researched learning innovation since 1990, initially in Modern Languages and Geography and latterly in Higher Education development.

Her research interests include programme and project evaluation; continuing professional development; institutional innovation and change; e-learning implementation. Current projects include: the Socio-political impact of learning in immersive worlds (Leverhulme Trust) and editing the iPED Research Network book: Academic Futures: Inquiries into Higher Education and Pedagogy.

Frances is a Fellow of SEDA and Chair of its Scholarship, Research and Evaluation Committee; she is a member of the editorial board of the SEDA journal IETI.

Liz Drewett

Web and Office Administrator

Liz co-runs the website and all of the University's HR websites. She produces directorate leaflets and brochures for internal and external customers.

Liz is also responsible for the processing and despatch of OCSLD book orders and administration for the Cyclescheme.

Lynn Farrell

Head of Administration and Finance

Lynn has worked in OCSLD since September 2003, and has been Finance and Administration Manager since February 2008. As well as managing the finances for the Directorate of Human Resources, Lynn manages the team of 6 support staff, and is PA to the Directorate Management Team.

Valerie Fawcett

Staff Development Consultant

Valerie joined OCSLD in September 2010 as a Staff Development Consultant on a part-time interim basis covering maternity leave.

Valerie has been working for herself as a learning and development consultant for over 15 years after a first career in educational publishing. Valerie has provided training courses and individual coaching in people management, personal development and interpersonal skills for clients in public, private and voluntary sectors.

David Langston

Staff Development Consultant

David shares responsibility for the provision of leadership and management development at Oxford Brookes and, in particular, has lead responsibility for the Senior Staff Development Programme (SSDP). A member of the British Psychological Society and their Register of Competence in Occupational Testing, David is accredited to facilitate a range of profiling instruments and questionnaires. At Oxford Brookes, he frequently uses the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and 360° feedback in one-to-one coaching of people who are developing their leadership capabilities. He sits on the national steering group responsible for reviewing the National Occupational Standards for Leadership and Management and has designed and introduced a 360° questionnaire that is aligned to those standards.

Elizabeth Lovegrove

Learning Technologist and Digital Media Editor

Elizabeth is OCSLD's learning technologist. She also trains people in using Dreamweaver for web site management, co-runs this website and all of the university's HR websites, and edits and produces literature and marketing material for OCSLD and HR.

George Roberts

Educational Development Consultant

George has been at Oxford Brookes since 2000 and joined OCSLD in June 2006 as an Educational Developer (e-Learning). In his previous role he advised the Head of e-Learning and the Senior Management Team of the University on policy for off-campus e-learning and e-learning partnerships.

He leads and teaches on the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PCTHE) as well as conducting other educational development activities: workshops and consultancies.

He recently completed a doctorate (July 2011) at the University of Southampton on biographical narratives of adult users of a community IT centre on a large estate.

He also undertakes research into the pedagogical, social and technical dimensions of e-learning nationally and internationally and is interested in the interactions between personal identity and the values and beliefs that are embedded in the artefacts of Learning Technology.

Previously, George taught on the Open University MA course, “Language and Literacy in a Changing World”. He was on the Executive Committee of the Association for Learning Technology(ALT) and head of the organising committee of the ALT-C conference from 2005-2007.

For 10 years before joining Brookes he was an instructional designer in the international energy industry.

Rhona Sharpe

Head of OCSLD and Deputy Director of the Directorate of Human Resources

Rhona is Head of the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development and Deputy Director of the Directorate of Human Resources at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK. Her interests are around developing online courses and uses of technology and encouraging pedagogic research. She runs workshops, online courses, and offers consultancy on e-learning topics for higher education staff across the UK. Rhona has project directed a number of JISC learner experience projects which have received great interest and national recognition across both the further and higher education sector, in pioneering innovative research methods and techniques for eliciting students’ expectations and experiences of using technology in their learning.

Rhona is one of the co-founders of ELESIG (Evaluation of Learners' Experiences of e-learning Special Interest Group), a fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

She is Editor of the Brookes eJournal for Learning and Teaching and Co-editor of the journal Research in Learning Technology.

Fiona Smith

Fiona has been with OCSLD since February 1999 and administers our external courses, online and face to face, workshops located at various venues nationally and internationally and consultancy work. Fiona is also the administrator of the Improving Student Learning annual symposium, course administrator for the Postgraduate Certificate for Teaching in HE and the Associate Teachers in HE courses.

Kay Tillyer

Workbased Qualifications Project Manager

Kay is a part-time member of the consultant team and specialises in workforce development projects (like apprentices, work experience, interns), as well as vocational skills and knowledge enhancement, and personal development.  She commissions and supports accreditation for occupational skills through NVQ and other QCF frameworks, and develops partnerships with award bodies and FE colleges: she is particularly interested in vocational progression routes that bridge divides between school and work, work and further and higher education, and one career route and another. She is a qualified counsellor and teacher and manages the accreditation of CMLP, Future Leaders and a variety of early-level qualifications within Brookes, including foundation and life-skills projects.

Ian Whiting

Staff Development Consultant

Ian joined Brookes in January 2006 from the European Aeronautical Defence and Space Company (EADS) where he worked as a Senior Learning and Development  Advisor.  He is a learning and development practitioner experienced in delivering new initiatives into a variety of industry sectors, applying well-honed consultancy skills, project management rigour and general pragmatism.  Industry sectors include Airlines (British Airways), Hotels (Inter-Continental Hotels) Data Marketing, Maritime, Call Centres. This is combined with experience in organisational development and HR.

Ian's areas of interest include developing project management support into organisations, enhancing the consultancy skills of academics and delivering a variety of generalist HR related courses such as Recruitment and Selection Skills.

Ian has an MA in Personnel Management  and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
