A Guide to Teaching International Students
Janette Ryan
The Guide to Teaching International Students has been developed for teachers who wish to improve their skills on teaching the international students who are enrolled in their mainstream university courses. It is designed to be easy reading for busy academics offering ideas, activities and suggestions that are realistic and easily implemented. In their own words, teachers describe their experiences of teaching international students. The book is designed so you can tackle particular issues (i.e. How can I run the seminar differently now that we have enrolled two Finns, three Malaysians and a Nigerian?).
Each chapter contains challenging questions that will help you consider how you can better orient your teaching practices to be inclusive of international students. Teacher-student and student-student relationships are discussed from a variety of angles. The impact of culture and language on these relationships is explored in several chapters and there is a wide variety of examples to lessen negative impact and increase the positive impact of international students in mainstream university classes. Other chapters deal with issues concerning assessment; course design; personal tutoring; postgraduate supervision; the universities role in intergrating international students and useful cultural information - all with a fresh innovative approach to teaching international students.
