Kate Exley

Kate works in academic staff development at the University of Leeds and as an independent consultant. She is a Senior Fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Working as an educational consultant she has visited more than 60 UK institutions to lead development projects and deliver staff and student workshops on a wide range of teaching, assessment and research supervision topics. She has published widely and is editor of the Routledge Press series "Key Guides for Effective Teaching in Higher Education" which includes her co-authored books:

  • Giving a Lecture: From Presenting to Teaching, 2nd edition (2009) (With Dennick)
  • Working One-to-One with Students: Supervising, Coaching, Mentoring and Personal Tutoring (2008) (With Wisker et al)
  • Small Group Teaching: Seminars, Tutorials and Beyond (2004) (With Dennick)

She has authored a number of teaching guidance web-site materials for International staff and postgraduates who teach. Kate contributes to HEA accredited Post-graduate Certificates in Teaching and Learning at five institutions and has acted as external examiner for such programmes at Queens' Belfast, Liverpool, Bath and Northumbria and Liverpool John Moores universities. She has regularly acted as an external evaluator for development projects (e.g. 2 FDLT projects and a large CETL at The University of Nottingham)  she was a member of the HEA Engineering Subject Centre Advisory Board. Kate was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2008.

Kate has a PhD in genetics and worked as a lecturer in genetics at the University of Nottingham before becoming Academic Staff Development Officer at that university. She lives in Nottinghamshire, is married to Pete and has three children, Josh, Fraser and Beth.
