Valerie Clifford

Valerie is currently working in the Teacher Development Unit at Victoria University, Melbourne and is an external evaluator for the ALTC project Internationalisation at Home, run by University of Canberra and Griffith University. Valerie was Deputy Head of the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development from 2006 – 2010, and also the inaugural Director of CICIN, the Centre for International Curriculum Inquiry and Networking. 

Prior to being at Brookes Valerie was Head of the Academic Development Unit at Monash University in Australia where she also worked at the Malaysian and South African campuses. Before that she was Director of the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. Other teaching and research experiences in New Zealand and Belize have included six years as a Research Fellow in the University of Otago Medical School researching women’s health, which is the subject of her PhD.

Her international experiences have led to her current research interests in internationalisation of the curriculum, feminist pedagogy, reflective practice in multi-cultural environments and academic writing. She has published widely and recently edited a book with Catherine Montgomery entitled Moving towards Internationalization of the Curriculum in Higher Education, published by OCSLD and has been editor of two Special Issues of journals on internaitonalisation:

  • Internationalising the Home Student. Higher Education Research and Development, 30(5). (2011).
  • Using formal and informal curricula to improve interactions between home and international students. Journal of Studies in International Education, 13, (2009).
