Digital literacies

Want a quick briefing from an expert in the field? Our one day online briefings assume no prior knowledge and get you up to speed quickly. They are also useful background experience for some of our longer courses.

This seminar, with guest speaker, Helen Beetham, looks at those ways and means by which we become effective online learners and teachers. We will look at the question of academic literacy: that set of practices by which we come to master the styles, audiences, genres, media and channels of academic communication. We will then ask what is particular and special about digital literacy? Is this simply reframing an ongoing theme in education concerned with critical thinking and scientific methods? Or, are there particular aspects of 'being digital' that can be abstracted from these wider debates?

The course will be conducted using the Elluminate environment, which combines audio, video, slide presentations, text discussions and drawing tools. The fee includes a short, practical, hands on introduction to using the Elluminate environment, to prepare you for this course.
