Internationalising the curriculum for all students

17 October - 18 November 2012 Book now
Course aims
This course is designed to introduce teachers in higher education to the wide-ranging concept of an internationalised curriculum. The course will challenge your conceptions of an internationalised curriculum and offer the opportunity to explore curriculum, teaching and assessment strategies in terms of global perspectives, inter-cultural capabilities and responsible citizenship.
Your exploration will be contextualised within your institutional and disciplinary environments. By the end of the course you should be familiar with a range of resources and perspectives on internationalisation of the curriculum (IoC) and have thought through how best to focus your efforts in this area according to your position in your institution.
Course participants
This course will be of most benefit to academics developing, or planning to develop, curricula to prepare graduates for living and working in an international, multi-cultural society. Participants will need to bring to the session the outline or details of a course (a whole programme not a module) that they wish to internationalise. They may also wish to familiarise themselves with any institutional or faculty policies about IoC.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will:
- Understand the concept of the internationalised curriculum;
- Have demonstrated a knowledge of a range of IoC strategies;
- Have engaged with the concept of IoC in your own institutional and disciplinary context;
- Have considered how you wish to approach working with IoC in your own institution or on your own courses.
Course approach
This is a fully online course based around principles of constructivism and collaboration. Working with participants from a number of tertiary institutions, each week’s work includes readings and reflection, as well as the opportunity to engage in sharing your experiences, insights and reflections with others on the course to help inform your analysis and planning.
This is a highly interactive course and to obtain full benefit from the course you are recommended to schedule 4-6 hours per week for at least three visits a week to the course site, reading and thinking time.
Previous participants have said:
"Every single individual who has taken part in the course, whether students or facilitators has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience that has enriched my own understanding of IoC".
"I enjoyed participating on this course and being part of the internationalising of a curriculum as it happened - by this I mean I experienced what many of our international students do through enrolling in an online course where the majority of respondents are in different parts of the world".
Course assessment
OCSLD online courses are not formally assessed or accredited. We do offer Certificates of Attendance to those who participate in each of the course's main learning activities.
You will be provided with a course text Moving towards Internationalisation of the Curriculum for Global Citizenship in Higher Education, edited by Valerie Clifford and Catherine Montgomery.
