What previous participants have said
“The course has been valuable at a number of different levels: in gaining a basic understanding of the possible functions of a VLE; in providing a much greater appreciation of the role of the online tutor; and in helping me to empathise with students learning online for the first time.”
“The course was well structured, evidence-based and rich in its resources and the tutors modelled good practice.”
“It was useful to see tutors demonstrate effective, timely and appropriate tutoring without it becoming a huge workload as this is major concern for many staff.”
“Before I have only supported students on a one to one basis via e mail and can now see what a great impact collaborative discussion could have.”
“For me the most enjoyable thing has been talking to tutors from other institutions. As a champion of online learning in a department which sees it as yet another infringement on their time, I have become slightly isolated and talking to others has made me realise that I am not alone. The insightful comments of the tutors and students to my, often rambling, musings has been extremely helpful. “
“I had no previous experience of e-learning … and so as the course is ending and I have survived, I feel a great sense of achievement. Not least because from feeling extremely vulnerable at the beginning of the course, I gradually summoned the strength to be myself and contribute what I could. I drew great encouragement from the tutors and the other participants feedback. So a big thank you to both tutors and to all those who took time to reply to me.”
“Before doing this course I doubted to a certain degree the usefulness of an online component in a language course. I particularly found it difficult to imagine how and to what extent the interactive tasks which I had designed might be a good enough substitute for classroom interaction. I now think that I was asking myself the wrong question. The tasks will not be a substitute, classroom interaction will still be possible since the course is a blended course, and the interactive tasks will hopefully generate a different kind of interaction and add a new dimension to the course.”
“This course proved to be quite an intensive introduction to online tutoring and mainly from the perspective of the students. How useful is that! I use the exclamation mark because for me I cannot think of a better outcome from this course than to have gained some real empathy with the online student experience - so a statement rather than a question. I hope that this will help me to be a more effective tutor.”
“The whole atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive at all stages. .. How to create a truly inclusive and welcoming course - wow what a fantastic learning outcome.”
“Tutors are really supportive and on-the-ball with personal responses and rapid response to questions.”
“I will definitely recommend the course. It was well designed and the technology enabled and did not obscure the human interventions by fellow students and staff. I feel I could now introduce an online element into my traditionally delivered course. “
