Implementation of the standard Student Module Evaluation Template from September 2011

Background

After consultation, and much discussion, on the 22 June 2011 it was agreed at University AESC that all module leaders will use a standard Student Module Evaluation Questionnaire from September 2011. AESC agreed the content and format of the template and the project plan for implementing the new template.

From September 2012 it is intended to integrate the module questionnaire into Moodle and for all students to complete it electronically.

The main changes

As is currently the case, the responsibility for ensuring that students evaluate the module remains with the module leader.

The main differences are:

  • All module leaders will use the standard questionnaire.
  • A Module Evaluation Analysis Tool (right click the link to download this excel 2010 file 55KB) will be used to produce a summary of the student responses to the satisfaction questions for inclusion in the module evaluation report for discussion at programme committees and annual review. Note that the functionality of this spreadsheet requires the use of MS Office 2010 - it will not work with previous versions of MS Office.
  • The summaries will all be collated at University level for use with the APTT data.

Good Practice

  • The student module evaluation questionnaire should be seen as a part of the ongoing dialogue between staff and students about how to improve the module and the quality of the student experience. It should supplement not replace existing processes for achieving this dialogue eg. Focus groups, student forums, student representatives.
  • Module Leaders should discuss the questions/statements in the evaluation template with students at some time during the module and decide when they will be expected to complete the form.
  • Module Leaders should, if possible, include a short mid-point evaluation session (temperature reading) for students to feedback verbally about the module.
  • The form should be completed before teaching ends, in class using electronic smart devices if possible, to ensure robust response rates.
  • Module Leaders should confirm to students that the information provided by them will remain confidential and will be collected in by a fellow student and taken to the Faculty Office on the campus for analysis.
