First steps into teaching in higher education

OCSLD offers an attendance certificate 'First Steps into Teaching in Higher Education' to participants who attend the opening day of module p70405, plus at least a further 6 hours from the rest of the Associate Teachers workshop programme. The opening day introduces the fundamentals of student learning and perspectives on university teaching. Participants select other workshops from the programme according to their intended teaching or assessment responsibilities.

This provision meets the recommendations from the Quality Assurance Agency that we provide initial training for postgraduate students, who are going into a teaching role.

Associate Teachers course

The Associate Teachers course (AT) is an introductory teaching course designed for the University’s part-time teachers, known as associate teachers. These may be graduate teaching assistants, hourly-paid staff, sessional teachers or those who support learners in departments such as the Library and Computer Services.

Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PCTHE)

A part-time certificated course designed to develop and enhance teaching skills. The course is nationally recognised and is accredited by the Higher Education Academy.

This course is compulsory for teaching staff working more than 0.5 fte with less than five years experience teaching in HE

Supervising and managing student research

This is a 20 M-level module that can be taken as a stand alone module or as part of the MA in Education. The module covers the elements of good supervision, including the student-supervisor relationship, structuring supervision sessions, giving and receiving feedback, encouraging students to write and examining research degrees.

Embedding learning technologies in further and higher education

This is a 20 M-level module that can be taken as a stand alone module or as part of the MA in Education. It is designed to support staff who are in the process of embedding e-learning into the student curriculum or wider student experience. This is a work based learning module, where you will work on an individual project, supported by a tutor. Your tutor will guide you through a pre-defined sequence of structured, developmental learning activities which will help you to carefully select, integrate and evaluate your use of technology.

Master of Arts in Education

The MA in Education is designed as a pathway to develop pedagogical research. It can be taken part-time over two years and builds on the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PCTHE). There is also a route for anyone who is now teaching but who has not completed the PCTHE or has joined Brookes with qualifications in teaching from other institutions.
