Chancellor illuminates Brookes campus
More than 500 people attended Jon Snow's final Chancellor's lecture at Oxford Brookes on April 16 followed by a 'switch on' ceremony to illuminate the University’s main campus.
Vice-Chancellor, Janet Beer, applauded the Chancellor’s work over the past seven years. She said:
"We're grateful for the support and enthusiasm that Jon has given, freely and generously, to the thousands of staff and students with whom he's come into contact over the past seven years…
"He'll be sadly missed but happily remembered as someone who has helped us set our course for the future, helped us lift our ambitions and set our sights high."
Following his lecture, Jon Snow unveiled a new tree lighting scheme to brighten up the campus as part of Brookes' redevelopment plans. The lights along with new flags on the Headington Road will signal people's arrival at the University.
Later this year, the University will release its plans for a new landmark building on its Gipsy Lane campus. By investing in exciting architecture and new public spaces that will give both the community and students easy access to shops, cafes and a new University library, Brookes is aiming to create an exciting modern gateway into Oxford.
Jon Snow said:
"In my time as Chancellor I have seen Brookes mature into a University that is producing world-class work that has a huge impact on people's lives.
"Oxford is blessed with two great universities and Brookes’ plans for its campuses mean that it will at last have a physical environment to match its reputation. This will be a major asset to both Brookes and the city."
The University's tree lighting scheme on Headington Road uses LED lights. LED lighting is energy-efficient and long-lasting. When turned on during an evening, the tree lighting scheme uses approximately the same amount of energy as boiling a kettle. Oxford Brookes already sources 100% of electricity from renewable resources.
