Work begins to prepare temporary medical centre

As part of the ongoing works to prepare for the redevelopment of the Gipsy Lane site it is necessary to relocate the medical centre, currently housed in part of the remaining section of the Darcy Building. Work has started this week in the ground floor area formally used as teaching rooms in the Helena Kennedy Student Centre (HK 1-4) and will continue through to the summer. HK 5 and 6, on the first floor, will remain in use.

Although temporary, this accommodation will provide the same services, operate within the same opening hours and will be a better quality of space, designed also to be more accessible. The entrance will be from the path leading round to the rear of the Students' Union and the bridge over to the Centre for Sport and Cheney Student Village.

Due to the nature of the work there will be some disruption from noise but the initial stripping out and demolition of internal walls was carried out over the Christmas break to avoid major problems.

It is intended that the Medical Centre will return to the Gipsy Lane part of the campus once the new student centre is built with the adjoining wing off the public piazza to accommodate this amongst other medical and commercial provisions.
