Topping out of new workshop building
Vice-Chancellor Janet Beer joined staff and students from Built Environment for a tour of the new workshop building on Gipsy Lane site to mark the topping out on Monday 2 March.
Students were able to discuss key technical elements of the design with the lead architect from Design Engine and were shown sample materials for the exterior of the building.
The new workshop meets high environmental standards utilising natural lighting to reduce energy use, a green roof to control surface run off and good ventilation. It will include a new Technology Laboratory providing the base for the teaching of construction.
To celebrate the occasion, Prof Beer was also presented with a plaque from John Gentle, Director of Gentle Consulting - the contractors responsible for the building work.
The new workshop is due to be completed in 2009.
