Nurturing raw talent at Oxford Brookes
The Boat Club nurtures raw talent.
Oxford Brookes aims to inspire each new generation of athletes, whether they are novice or elite rowers. Pupils from the Oxford Academy school have met and trained with our Olympians and our student rowers come to the boat club through a number of routes.
Matthew Higginson’s prowess as an oarsman was spotted through the Sporting Giants programme while he was still at school. Matthew trained with Brookes while studying in his sixth form before joining the university in 2008.
‘Rowing is not really that easy to get involved in so the Sporting Giants programme was a good opportunity to get everyone on a rowing machine and see if they showed real talent,’ he says.
We strive to work with young people who don’t have access to rowing opportunities to ensure we produce the best British rowers of the future.
