“Originally I was sceptical about counselling, but I am really pleased with how things are generally improving.”

Concerns about others:   This section of our web pages is for friends, family, academic staff, hall wardens or other staff who are concerned about a student. We offer some thoughts about how you can manage the situation.

  • Counselling - some information and advice for staff on how to suggest that a student comes to the Counselling Service.
  • Bibliotherapy – self help by reading. The Counselling Service publishes a list of recommended books, and all the books are stocked by the library. University staff members and GPs can access a system whereby they can recommend a particular book.
  • Helping a friend – some ideas about how to help a friend who has emotional problems.
  • Students at risk – guidance for staff who are concerned about a student.
  • Self help – our self help web pages may also be appropriate to visit.
