Extending, or getting a new, Tier 4 (General) adult student visa outside the UK

For applications made from 6 April 2012 the amount you will need to show for your living costs will rise from £600 to £800 a month

Changes to required living costs and maximum time allowed for Tier 4 visas from April 6th

Before applying for a visa you will need to get a Confirmation of Acceptance to Study from Oxford Brookes. This is known as a CAS and you cannot get a Tier 4 visa without one. How to get your CAS
If you are an undergraduate degree or International Foundation Diploma student and have already started your course you should get your CAS from the Academic Management Office

7 Steps for applying for your visa outside the UK

Download and read our Information Sheet then follow the steps below

1
Read the following news pages for the latest visa news that may affect your application:

  • ISAS News
  • UKCISA News
  • UKBA news

2
Check where you need to apply for your visa and whether you can apply online.

3
Read the UKBA Application Guide and the UKBA Policy Guidance and check that your bank is not on the UKBA lists of unacceptable financial institutions for some countries.

Note: If you are a continuing student applying from your home country then you should expect to show the full maintenance costs in your bank account (£600 per month for up to 9 months of the course). The only exception to this is if you have been on a course for 6 months or more and STILL HAVE a current student visa. If you are unsure contact ISAS.

We also recommend that you read the UKCISA Information Sheet.

Also check carefully that your photograph meets the UKBA photo guidance.

You must read these very carefully. If you do not UKBA are likely to refuse your application without giving you a chance to correct any mistakes on the form or send in any further documents.
