Overview
The General English course develops your confidence in using English when living or working in an English-speaking environment. You should choose this course if you would like the enjoyment and stimulation of improving your English over the summer in a modern university environment.
The course is taught on the main university campus, where you will be able to benefit from our state-of-the-art sports facilities, modern libraries, and computer centres, as well as the service of our international-student advisers who will provide comprehensive support during your time in Oxford.
Teaching, learning and assessment
Teaching is intensive with 21 class hours a week. You will be taught in small groups with a maximum of 16 students in each class.
Accreditation and quality
The summer programme teachers are dedicated to improving your language skills so you can study or work with confidence in English. The courses are designed by experienced lecturers who are experts in English language teaching.
We are accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English as a foreign language. The report from our last inspection stated:
The British Council inspected and accredited Oxford Brookes International in October 2009. The Accreditation Scheme assesses the standards of management, resources and premises, teaching and welfare and accredits organisations which meet the overall standard in each area inspected (see the British Council website for details).
The large English language teaching department of this university offers courses in academic English for adults.
Points of excellence were noted in aspects of general management, academic resources, course design and learner training.
The inspection report stated that the organisation met the standards of the Scheme.

This course aims to increase your confidence in using English when living or working in an English-speaking environment and learning about British society and culture.
The course includes:
- listening and speaking
- social and idiomatic English expressions to use in conversation
- grammar
- vocabulary
- pronunciation
- British society and culture.
International Summer Programme
The course is part of our International Summer Programme, which runs English language courses for academic and everyday purposes.
You will be able to take part in our weekly programme of social activities including shopping trips, visits to local and regional attractions, film and theatre evenings and sports tournaments. We have a dedicated staff to provide support and assistance to help you feel at home in a new country.

Minimum entry level
IELTS 3.5 / TOEFL 400pbt, 32ibt / Cambridge PET or equivalent
Maximum entry level
IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 600pbt, 100ibt / Cambridge FCE or equivalent
