Overview
This course will improve your use of academic English and prepare you to take the internationally recognised IELTS examination for entry to a course at foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate level.
You will improve the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, and you will take regular practice tests under exam conditions so you are fully prepared for the exam. We will also give you individual practice for the speaking skills test.
Teaching, learning and assessment
You will be taught by highly qualified, experienced IELTS tutors. You will have 21 teaching hours per week, with a maximum of 16 students in a class.
You will have access to the university’s learning support facilities, including email and the internet on the networked computers and use of the university’s intranet for additional learning material. The library offers you thousands of books, journals, reference materials, newspapers and multimedia items for your research and for your language learning.
Accreditation and quality
We are accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English as a foreign language. The report from our last inspection stated:
The British Council inspected and accredited Oxford Brookes International in October 2009. The Accreditation Scheme assesses the standards of management, resources and premises, teaching and welfare and accredits organisations which meet the overall standard in each area inspected (see the British Council website for details).
The large English language teaching department of this university offers courses in academic English for adults.
Points of excellence were noted in aspects of general management, academic resources, course design and learner training.
The inspection report stated that the organisation met the standards of the Scheme.

During the course you will:
- learn test-taking techniques for exam success
- gain access to extensive exam practice materials
- take IELTS practice tests under exam conditions
- improve your knowledge and use of English pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary
- develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills
- practise your English in a multicultural university environment.
International Summer Programmes
The course is part of our International Summer Programmes, which provide English language courses for academic and everyday purposes.
You will be able to take part in our social activities including shopping trips, visits to local and regional attractions, film and theatre evenings and sports tournaments. We have dedicated staff to provide support and assistance to help you feel at home in a new country.

At the end of the course you will take the optional IELTS examination, which is an internationally recognised test of English language competence. The results will be available in time for university courses starting in September.
Students progress to courses at foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate level in any academic discipline.
Undergraduate courses: students will need to obtain at least IELTS 6.0 (with 6.0 in reading and writing and 5.5 in Listening and Speaking) to satisfy the English language requirements for entry to most Oxford Brookes undergraduate courses.
Postgraduate courses: students will need to obtain IELTS 6.0 to 7.0 to satisfy the English language requirements for entry to most Oxford Brookes postgraduate courses.
Entry to a foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate course will also require appropriate academic qualifications. Please check the specific requirements of the course you wish to enter.

Entry requirements
Applicants are welcome from any academic discipline.
- Minimum of IELTS 4.5; TOEFL 475 pbt, 53 ibt; or equivalent.
Please contact the Summer Programmes Administrator if you would like to discuss whether the course would be at a suitable level for you.
How to apply

If you do not have an IELTS or TOEFL score, to meet new visa regulations you will need to submit with your application an academic reference (in English) which indicates your proficiency level in English language skills. The reference should be from the Principal, Director of Studies or equivalent of your last school or college. It should state the number of hours of study per week, the years of study and your achievements in the way of tests or qualifications. Your visa application will be refused by the UK Border Agency if we have not received this reference.
If you intend to take the IELTS test in August please complete the attached form and send the original to Kings College, Oxford. The deadline to apply for the test is Monday 9th July 2011. You are required to pay a fee of £125 and details are included within the application form. Please read the form carefully before you complete it.
Unfortunately we cannot help you in completing this form as you have not yet started the course but it would be too late it we waited for your arrival on the 6th August. Other tests are available but it is your responsibility to organise it. For more information please click here.
