Overview
The distance learning Postgraduate Certificate in Management will provide you with a comprehensive grounding in managerial work disciplines, in particular the management of teams, departments and projects. You can view the course structure here.
By the time you have completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Management you will have a broad base of practical skills that will enable you to be an effective, productive manager anywhere in the world. Management is about performance and change. To respond quickly and flexibly to rapidly changing markets and environments, managers need a broad, integrated understanding of how their organisations work.
Managers must at all times be open to new experiences and opportunities and be able to reflect on and learn from their activities and its outcomes; the skills of the reflective practitioner are therefore an important theme throughout the course. The emphasis is on your own professional development and everything you study is related to management roles and responsibilities you currently exercise.

Course content
Academic Study Methods is designed to help prepare for the online programme of study. Moreover, it provides a thread that weaves through all the other modules on this programme. The sessions for this module are separated into two broad areas. Firstly, the practical knowledge and skills base required to successfully complete the programme. Secondly, there is an introduction to the concept of reflective practice that forms an integral component of the programme. The knowledge and skills that are gained through this module, even though not focused on a specific management discipline, will help to enhance management practice - the ideas discussed and practiced can be transferred directly to the work environment.
Managing Customers and Quality All organisations need to manage their activities in order to identify and satisfy the needs and wants of their stakeholders. Likewise, departments within an organisation have internal customers with needs that have to be identified and satisfied. Management of the quality of service provided is a major task carried out by staff to meet these needs and standards. This module is about planning, designing and evaluating activities in order to provide a quality service to customers.
Managing Finance and Information Organisations and managers have to deal effectively with information, financial and non-financial, when making decisions and managing activities. The nature of information flows has become increasingly critical and complex as organisations become more global in their focus and as technology develops rapidly. The successful management of information and financial resources can offer an organisation competitive advantage and increased effectiveness in achieving its outcomes. On this module students will learn to apply techniques to understand and interpret information and have a critical understanding of the limitations of those techniques and results. This will enable them to work effectively both independently and alongside finance and information management specialists.
The purpose of the Managing People and Organisations module is to provide an understanding of contemporary issues around the management for performance of any organisation (whether commercial, not for profit or governmental); that is the successful achievement of organisational goals. The module ranges across the organisation and into the world external to it where products and services are actually delivered and goals are achieved. It is broad ranging and covers the management and behaviour of people in organisations at the level of the work team as well as the structuring of work teams into a whole organisation and how that organisation is directed in the medium and longer term.
As our courses are reviewed regularly, the modules you choose from may vary from those listed here.
Teaching, learning and assessment
The elements of the programme – course texts, activities and assignments, online resources, and tutor and peer group support – ensure that you can immediately apply newly learned skills and techniques in very practical ways.
Although there is no face-to-face teaching there is no compromise in the quality of the programme thanks to the support and services on offer through the virtual campus.
Each module is worth a number of credits (the programme is worth 60 M level credits). The amount of time each student will take to achieve the learning outcomes for a module will vary according to the needs and ability of the individual. However, the modules are designed so that each credit equates to approximately 10 hours of learning. Some of these hours will be through online seminar contact time and others will be through independent study.
The Certificate in Management Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) includes many of the usual resources that you would expect to find on a university campus. You can communicate with other students in seminar activities, gain access to extensive library resources, administrative support and a Student Common Room, all via your computer. Online supported study provides you with the benefits of being able to communicate with other students from across the world to share ideas, learn about ‘doing business’ in other cultures and contexts.
The programme offers you the flexibility to study at times which suit you. The seminars are not run in real time, so time zones present no barriers and enable you to participate when it is convenient.
Each module has a core textbook and recommends additional reading materials such as other textbooks or articles, for example from academic journals and newspapers. Journals for example, are available via the VLE. Case studies are widely used in management education and on Certificate in Management programme in particular.
Assessment for each module is in two forms; you are required to complete a final assignment that reviews some aspect of organisational behaviour within your own organisation or an organisation with which you are familiar. This assignment is valued at 70% of the total mark. In addition, you are required to participate in assessed online
