At Oxford Brookes University we take an international approach to study and the practical nature of our courses is underpinned by rigorous academic content. Our staff have real-world business experience, which benefits students through practical insight.

Grounded in professional expertise and experience, this practice-based, client-focused programme introduces you to the fundamental principles of coaching and mentoring. You will experience a variety of teaching and learning methods designed to enable you to develop active learning techniques, reflect on practice and undertake independent research and you can view the course structure here.

Regular online workshops and discussions support learning at a distance and you have your own professional coach-supervisor to support your development in the first year. Assessment is based on coursework assignments and a dissertation; there are no exams.

The course is delivered part-time over two years. It consists of seven modules, and allows you to design a study programme to fit your particular area of interest. Half of the programme is delivered through classes and workshops, which take place once a month at the Wheatley Campus on Fridays or Saturdays. The other half is delivered via distance learning, allowing you to fit your studies around other commitments. You can view the course structure here.

Why Brookes?

With the largest master’s coaching cohort in the UK, we are at the leading edge of the profession. For experienced coaches, we offer the only university-based master's programme in Coaching and Mentoring Supervision, and we are the first to add a professional Doctor of Coaching and Mentoring to our portfolio.

We provide programmes for practitioners working across a range of settings, including business, industry, education and healthcare. Our academic staff bring a wealth of experience to the classroom and are at the forefront of coaching and mentoring. They continue to practice and research in these fields and are supported by high profile researchers such as Tatiana Bachkirova and visiting professors including David Clutterbuck, who introduced mentoring to Europe in the 1970s and has since become one of the leading authorities on coaching and mentoring.

Our International Centre for Coaching and Leadership Development (ICCLD) has extended the range of coaching services offered to include: coaching supervision and accreditation, postgraduate coaching/mentoring programmes (MA and DCM), customised short courses (with or without credit), coaching consultancy specialising in creating a coaching culture, executive and business coaching and coaching and mentoring programme evaluation.

We are an active part of the coaching and mentoring community hosting the International Journal of Evidence Based Coaching and Mentoring, an Annual Coaching and Mentoring Research Conference and the Oxford Brookes Coaching and Mentoring Society, which provides collaboration and networking opportunities for academics and professionals from a wide spectrum of coaching and mentoring interest.

In detail

Course content

This part-time programme comprises seven modules of study amounting to 180 level-7 credits. Its modular structure will allow you to design a programme of work according to your particular area of interest.

Coaching and Mentoring Practice Fundamentals

Study begins with this 20-credit module, in which you have your own professional supervisor for a period of five months. The module provides vital experience of acting as mentor/coach and of being professionally supervised in that role. It is an opportunity to apply coaching and mentoring methodologies such as personal profiling and personal development planning, which are then translated into rigorous intellectual study through reflective practice and critical analysis. You may choose whether to focus specifically on mentoring, performance coaching or developmental coaching. The practice module draws on the expertise of internationally recognised coaching and mentoring experts. The module also includes a 180 degree feedback system and systematic reflection on practice which enables you to gain insight into areas for personal and organisational growth.

Alongside the practice module you undertake two core 20-credit modules:

Transformational Learning and Adult Development encourages critical thinking and expands awareness of issues in adult learning and development which impact directly on coaching and mentoring.

Psychotherapeutic Dimensions of Coaching and Mentoring focuses on the implications for coaching and mentoring of the three main areas of psychotherapy and counselling: psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive behavioural. We will explore the philosophy and theory of the different schools within these orientations, along with their different techniques and models, and we look at how these may be used to inform coaching and mentoring practice. Boundaries and ethical issues will be considered and respected.

After successfully completing these three modules, students may leave the programme with the Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring.

At Diploma stage, participants also complete three 20-credit modules:

Advanced Coaching and Mentoring Practice takes you into a more challenging level of professional practice, with in-depth workshops developing the practice of the reflective, evidence-based professional practitioner. You continue to develop your coaching and mentoring practice, and to receive one-to-one supervision over three months during this module.

In addition, you select two 20-credit modules from the following:

  • Psychological Perspectives on the Self
  • Coaching and Mentoring in Organisations
  • Positive Psychology
  • Independent Study (may be work-based or theoretical)
  • Research in Coaching and Mentoring (compulsory for students completing the full MA)

Master's-level study culminates in a 60-credit Dissertation module. The dissertation involves a piece of investigative research and comprises one third of the work for the MA degree. The dissertation focuses on a research problem of particular interest to the participant and is often work-based.

As our courses are reviewed regularly, course content and module choices may change from those currently listed in the course entry.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The programme is taught through a series of Friday or Saturday seminars and workshops (approximately one a month), and uses a variety of teaching and learning methods designed to enable you to develop active learning techniques, reflect on practice and undertake independent research. You can choose Friday or Saturday as your preferred day of attendance.

Approximately 50% of the programme is delivered through the Brookes Virtual distance learning platform. This provides a ‘virtual’ learning community in which students can discuss, debate and support each other in their study. Participants are encouraged to communicate electronically with their supervisor and their tutors (eg by email, Skype, etc), providing the flexibility of a partial distance learning programme, suitable for students who live far from Oxford.

All teaching, learning and assessment activities draw on the professional backgrounds, experience and knowledge of participants and encourage critical reflection. Teaching staff have particular research interests and expertise in coaching and mentoring and related fields and are drawn primarily from the Faculty of Business. Occasional visiting speakers from business and industry provide further input. You can also attend sessions of the Oxford Brookes Coaching and Mentoring Society (OBCAMS), which meets monthly, and draws outside speakers and presenters from all areas of coaching and mentoring.

There are no examinations. Assessment is entirely based on a variety of coursework assignments and the dissertation.
