MBA (Global Blended) - 2012 entry
MBA
Accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and EPAS (EFMD's Programme Accreditation System)
Overview
To be successful in a 21st-century business environment you need to think and lead across international boundaries. The MBA prepares you for the challenges of senior management in an increasingly competitive and global economy.
Our MBA develops your career by building on your professional and managerial experience, drawing from the different cultural experiences of the group. Our students come from more than 60 countries around the world. The emphasis is on leadership, strategic thinking and issues of implementation. We develop and combine your powers of critical enquiry with practical insight.
A distinguishing characteristic of the Oxford Brookes MBA is the emphasis on developing a 'collaborative' rather than 'competitive' approach to learning. This is based on our belief that successful businesses operate through the co-operation and collaboration of others, both within the business and through the development of long-term relationships and alliances with customers and suppliers.

Course content
With the Global Blended MBA, wherever you are in the world, you can continue to work while studying. You participate in the online seminars facilitated and summarised by experienced tutors who ensure that you are continually relating theory to practice. In addition, the diversity and experience of your fellow students means that you learn from sharing and debating business practices around the world.
Purpose-written, up-to-date textbooks, together with access to the Virtual Library, open 24/7, provides you with extensive resources - journal articles, business reports and e-books - to support your studies. Intensive face-to-face workshops develop leadership, consultancy and research capabilities and are delivered in Oxford and around the world. The capstone of the MBA is the dissertation or consultancy project, which can be tailored to meet the needs of your employer or to further your career aspirations and interests. As part of your fees, around 280 examination centres in 146 countries worldwide are available.
The Oxford Brookes MBA can significantly improve your employability prospects by providing you with:
- the confidence to operate across all areas of the business
- enhanced capabilities to lead, think and act more strategically
- self-insight into your leadership style and awareness of your strengths and limitations
- the ability to apply knowledge to your own organisation and a wide range of other situations
- an understanding of the challenges in other areas of the organisation
- the knowledge and expertise to meet the challenges of a more senior management role
- the skills to continue developing and learning after completing the MBA
- assistance with launching your career after graduation and membership of an alumni network for life.
The Oxford Brookes MBA can benefit your employer by:
- significantly improving your capabilities across a range of areas, e.g. marketing, strategic thinking, innovation and change, and people management
- improving your powers of analysis with greater ability and flexibility to operate at a more strategic level and contribute beyond your own functional specialism
- providing an opportunity for a cost effective management development programme
- allowing the flexibility to study and participate without regular absence from the workplace
- presenting the opportunity to gain value for your organisation through your dissertation or consultancy project, providing significant research into a relevant business issue.
This may help you to make a case to your employer for support with funding for the MBA programme. Your MBA journey will:
- provide you with a framework for the analysis of organisational activity and the integration and application of learning
- prepare you to take a holistic view of the organisation and its environment
- extend your leadership capabilities
- challenge and develop you by participating in short intensive international events where you are exposed to the issues facing business in different markets
- support you by guidance from experienced tutors and a dedicated administrative team and encourage you to seek a mentor
- develop your ability to work effectively with a diverse group of colleagues from different cultural backgrounds and industry sectors, helping you to improve your employability and develop new skills.
The MBA begins with an induction programme that familiarises you with the online learning environment and Virtual Library, where you meet tutors and fellow students. You will become familiar with the expectations of the programme and of study at masters level, understand the assessment requirements, introduced to case study analysis and to the feedback, resources and support available to you during your MBA. Induction prepares you to make the most of the learning opportunities offered by the MBA.
During the programme you are required to participate in two intensive face-to-face workshops which you must complete before graduation. These are offered at weekends or on a back-to-back basis at changing locations around the world and in Oxford. In addition, there are opportunities to participate in short intensive workshops and events with partner institutions in other countries and on campus in Oxford.
Your MBA gives you the opportunity to develop an area of interest by combining your elective choices with a dissertation or consultancy project in an appropriate field of study.
Electives currently offered online are:
- Strategic Market Development
- Strategic Accounting
- Finance.
Planning for New Business Ventures is available by intensive block study on campus (normally late June or early July).
You can, if your schedule permits, join other electives that are available on campus. As electives are reviewed regularly and may run at different times it is therefore advisable to check with the administrative team at the time of application.
As our courses are reviewed regularly, course content and module choices may change from the details given here.
Teaching, learning and assessment
We are more interested in you and your personal and intellectual development than where you are ranked amongst your peers in terms of ability and achievement. This approach is embedded in our teaching, learning and assessment on the MBA programmes.
The Global Blended MBA is a distance learning programme with a difference. The online seminars are central to the learning process. The debate and interaction create a lively learning environment and opportunities for feedback from peers and tutors. The seminars, together with independent study of the textbooks provided, completion of the activities within these textbooks, and research in the virtual library, prepare you for assessments.
All seminars are archived so you can access them or download them for the duration of your studies. Participation in the online seminars develops networks and the skills required for the conduct of global business in the 21st century.
Participation in the face-to-face workshops develops your leadership capabilities and research and consultancy skills, adding value to your programme and enhancing your employability. Other face-to-face opportunities with on- campus students and with overseas partners are open to you, helping to develop particular interests and expand your networks.
The programme is assessed using a variety of methods including participation in seminars, coursework assignments, case studies reflecting on practice and examinations and either a dissertation or consultancy project. There are opportunities for you to submit formative work to receive feedback (but not marks) from tutors to help develop your confidence and competence. You will also receive tutor feedback on each examination question answered, enabling you to learn from the experience.
Quality
The reputation of the Business School is underpinned through course accreditations awarded by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and EPAS, and through memberships of the Association of Business Schools and professional associations such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and the European Foundation for Management Development. The Business School is, therefore, widely regarded as one of the best within its peer group.
Our courses benefit from rigorous quality assurance procedures and regularly receive excellent feedback from external examiners, employers, students and professional bodies. In 2005, Business and Management achieved the best possible result in the discipline audit trail as part of the Quality Assurance Agency Institutional Audit.
Career prospects
Our alumni surveys indicate that students of the MBA make significant increases in salary and career progression.
In a recent survey 72% of graduates from the Global Blended MBA reported that they are now in senior management or director level positions and 99% said they would recommend the Global Blended MBA to others.
The school maintains a rigorous and dynamic doctoral programme leading to the higher degrees of DBA, MPhil and PhD. Postgraduate students join a supportive, friendly and multicultural research environment.
Choice of study-mode
You may also be able to tailor your programme to suit your personal needs by combining the different modes of study at appropriate points. For example you may choose to study your elective in an intensive block of study on campus in Oxford. Whichever mode of study you choose, your MBA award is the same.
The Oxford Brookes MBA offers a number of alternative paths to your award:
- Global blended MBA 30-month programme*
- Executive MBA 24 to 30-month programme
- Full-time MBA 12-month intensive programme.
The Oxford Brookes MBA offers the maximum flexibility and you can choose to join the full-time programme for approximately 5 months and then switch to the Global programme. This option will take approximately 20 months to complete.
*Accelerated option open to ACCA members (21 months).
