The Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (DHRM) is a nationally recognised programme leading to graduate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). The course is aimed at practising HR professionals seeking professional accreditation in order to further develop their careers.

Academically rigorous and practice-based, the DHRM provides the specialist knowledge, understanding and skills required for the challenging role of a human resource professional. Students can work towards the Diploma over 18 months, or choose in Semester 2 to step up to a two-year master’s degree (MA HRM). In addition to their academic studies, students are expected to build a portfolio of learning and achievement which demonstrates their personal development. The portfolio compiles information to present to the CIPD as part of the membership upgrade process and to current and future employers.

The programme follows the Professional Development Scheme of the CIPD and comprises the following modules: People Management and Development, Learning and Development, Employee Relations, People Resourcing, Employee Reward and the Management Research Report.

In the second semester, students are provided with a full briefing on the MA HRM option, enabling them to decide whether to continue on the 18-month DHRM route or step up to the two-year MA HRM option. For those students who would benefit, individual consultations can be arranged for a full discussion of the options. You can view the course structure here.

In detail

Course content

For details of Year 1 see the Certificate in Management.

Management Research Report
It is one of the key competencies for professionals in HR to be able to investigate, diagnose and report on relevant business issues and make practical recommendations for change or improvement within an organisation. During the module students are taken step-by-step through the key milestones required to successfully complete the management research report. The applied nature of the report requires a critical evaluative approach, empirical investigation and analysis and a combination of academic research and business report writing skills.

Managing Employment Relations
The cornerstone of all HR management activity is the employment relationship; as a legal, social, economic and psychological exchange. This module will provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the debates in contemporary employment relations, both national and international. It will provide opportunities for learners to critically evaluate employment relations practices and management control strategies in union and non-union, small and large, private, public and indigenous and multinational organisations. Learners will also be able to assess the impact of contextual changes on employment relations practices and organisational performance.

Resourcing and Reward
Two critical objectives of the HR function concern the mobilisation and reward of a workforce that meets organisational needs. Organisations can only function successfully if they are able to assemble together, retain, reward, and on occasion release individuals and teams. This module is built around these mission-critical HR functions.

Also: Reflective Practice and CPD portfolio.

As our courses are reviewed regularly, the modules you choose from may vary from those listed here.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Learning methods include: lectures, directed reading, case study analysis, workshops, self-directed learning in action learning sets, e-learning and project work. Students are required to attend Skills Development workshops, which are held over four weekends. Each module is delivered by a team of at least two tutors specialising in the module topic.

Each module is assessed individually with a range of assessment methods being used. These include individual assignments, group work, examinations, a CIPD portfolio and the management research report. Some assessments include an element of peer and/or self-assessment. Some aspects of learning are managed by students who meet regularly in action learning groups to share experiences of their practice, which helps build practical human resource knowledge.

PG students have access to dedicated research suites providing workspaces, computers and storage and a range of supporting activities such as seminars and an annual residential research methods programme.

Teaching staff are drawn primarily from the Department of Business and Management but with some contributions from specialists in other departments of the Faculty of Business.

Visiting speakers from business and industry, local government, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.
