Overview

The course is aimed at middle leaders in schools (heads of department, key stage coordinators, pastoral managers). It provides an overview of up-to-date research and educational theory to inform the process of leadership and management. It also offers opportunities for the practical application of theory in a school setting.

In detail

Course content

This course consists of two modules:

  • Leading and Managing People (single module)
  • Leading and Managing Change (double module)

Content includes:

  • key issues in leadership and management: vision and philosophy of education; school improvement and effectiveness; team leadership; managing meetings; recruitment and selection; motivating staff; managing diversity and inclusion; managing conflict
  • strategies for research and school based investigations: organisational structures and culture; strategic planning; continuing professional development; learning organisations; monitoring and evaluation; impact assessment; managing change; action research
  • analysis of professional development needs and progress
  • skills for academic study.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Leading and Managing People (single module)

Course schedule:
Typically, this would include 6 twilight sessions (approximately 18 hours of contact time) and 2 online discussions (approximately 6 hours of contact time).

Assessment:
A review document outlining your reflections on the course in the context of your continuing professional development (1000 words) and a structured essay which critiques a variety of literature related to leadership and management, linked to your professional experience (2000 words).

 

Leading and Managing Change (double module)

Course schedule:
Typically, this would include 12 twilight sessions (approximately 36 hours of contact time) and 4 online discussions (approximately 12 hours of contact time).

Assessment:
A critical analysis of a journal article focusing on the action research approach (1000 words). Students will also carry out their own intervention and write up a report. This will include an audit of the current context, a review of relevant literature, an evaluation of the action research methodology used and analysis and discussion of the outcomes (5000 words).

Free language courses for students - the Open Module

Free language courses are available to all full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students who are studying any course on our Headington (including Marston Road), Harcourt Hill or Wheatley Campuses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

Credit transfer

Oxford Brookes operates the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). All postgraduate single modules are equivalent to 10 ECTS credits, double modules to 20 ECTS credits, and treble modules to 30 ECTS credits. A full master's course will carry 90 ECTS credits. More about ECTS credits.
