To be successful in a 21st-century business environment you need to think and lead across international boundaries. The MBA prepares you for the challenges of senior management in an increasingly competitive and global economy.

The Oxford Brookes MBA develops your career by building on your professional and managerial experience - focusing on leadership, strategic thinking and issues of implementation. The MBA develops your skills of critical enquiry and practical insight, and equips you to manage your own development long term, helping you to succeed in an increasingly competitive environment. You can view the course structure here.

A distinguishing characteristic of the Oxford Brookes MBA is the emphasis on developing a 'collaborative' rather than 'competitive' approach to learning. This is based on our belief that successful businesses operate through the cooperation and collaboration of others, both within the business and through the development of long-term relationships and alliances with customers and suppliers.

Course content

The Full-time MBA programme, studied over 12 months, is an intensive experience, representing the fastest way of gaining the qualification.

The Oxford Brookes MBA can significantly improve your employability prospects by providing you with:

  • the confidence to operate across all areas of the business
  • enhanced capabilities to lead, think and act more strategically
  • self-insight into your leadership style and awareness of your strengths and limitations
  • the ability to apply knowledge to your own organisation and a wide range of other situations
  • an understanding of the challenges in other areas of the organisation
  • the knowledge and expertise to meet the challenges of a more senior management role
  • the skills to continue developing and learning after completing the MBA
  • assistance with launching your career after graduation and membership of an alumni network for life.

The Oxford Brookes MBA can benefit your employer by:

  • significantly improve your capabilities across a range of areas, e.g. marketing, strategic thinking, innovation and change, and people management
  • improving your powers of analysis with greater ability and flexibility to operate at a more strategic level and contribute beyond your own functional specialism
  • providing an opportunity for a cost effective management development programme
  • presenting the opportunity to gain value for your organisation through your dissertation or consultancy project, providing significant research into a relevant business issue.

This may help you to make a case to your employer for support with funding for the MBA programme.

Your MBA journey will:

  • support you through executive coaching or mentoring, which are features of the programme, helping you to improve your employability and develop new skills
  • provide you with a framework for the analysis of organisational activity and the integration and application of learning
  • prepare you to take a holistic view of the organisation and its environment
  • extend your leadership capabilities
  • challenge and develop you by participating in short intensive international events where you are exposed to the issues facing business in different markets
  • develop your ability to work effectively with a diverse group of colleagues from different cultural backgrounds and industry sectors.

The MBA begins with an induction programme that familiarises you with the learning environment and library facilities. It enables you to interact with other students and tutors. It facilitates understanding of the assessment requirements and introduces you to case study analysis and to the feedback and support available to you during the MBA. This induction prepares you to make the most of the learning opportunities afforded by the MBA.

During the programme you will have an opportunity to participate in an overseas workshop and take an elective with one of our partner institutions overseas.

As a full-time MBA student you will be supported by your own Personal Coach who will help you to focus on an area you wish to develop. Many of our full-time MBA students choose to focus on career development issues, however it is up to you to determine your own agenda.

Your MBA gives you the opportunity to develop an area of interest by combining your elective choices with a dissertation or consultancy project in an appropriate field of study. Electives are reviewed each year and may run at different times. It is therefore advisable to check the timings with the course administrator at the time of application.

The elective choices currently offered are in the following areas:

  • entrepreneurship and enterprise
  • hospitality and tourism management
  • information technology management
  • marketing
  • publishing
  • real estate
  • finance.

As our courses are reviewed regularly, the modules you choose from may vary from those listed here.

Teaching, learning and assessment

We are more interested in you and your personal and intellectual development than where you are ranked amongst your peers in terms of ability and achievement. This approach is embedded in our teaching, learning and assessment on the MBA programmes.

Full time lectures and discussions, role-play exercises, learning packages and seminars will be linked with selected case studies and assignments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in team working through structured syndicate work and group assignments. Your learning experience will be greatly enhanced through the knowledge of life and work that you and your fellow students bring to discussion and debate.

All students are put in groups for assessed work where they are presented with a series of “Leadership Challenge tasks”. While the challenges support your learning on the programme they also provide an opportunity for every individual student to take on a leadership role and receive feedback from their fellow students. The Leadership Development module provides a framework for students to further develop their leadership capabilities within a safe and supported environment.
