The Postgraduate Centre at our Business School

The Postgraduate Certificate in Management and Leadership aims to prepare you for practice as a professional manager and to expand your existing knowledge and develop key managerial skills relevant to your own organisation and to the wider organisational context. The course has been explicitly designed to ensure integration with your workplace experience.

The programme is widely recognised by employers as providing high quality management education. Many organisations use the Certificate in Management as a foundation for their general management development programmes. The PGCML is a highly regarded qualification in its own right but also offers a range of possibilities for progression onto other programmes, including the Postgraduate Diploma in Management and Leadership and an MA in Strategic Management and Leadership. You can view the course structure here.

The part-time on-campus programme takes 9 months to complete and is delivered through a series of lectures and workshops at the Wheatley Campus, beginning in September. Alternatively the programme can be pursued online over a 12 month period.

In detail

Course content

To reflect the value that students over some 20 years have derived from mixed learning groups of managers and HR professionals, the Brookes PGCML offers a shared curriculum during the first semester. The other 50% of the programme is specifically tuned to the needs of the separate groups.

Management is a broad subject and its academic study combines theory, research and practical application, reflected both in the teaching staff and in the participants. Teaching staff combine a wealth of professional and practical experience with research interests. Participants are drawn from a wide range of specialist backgrounds (e.g. information technology, engineering, financial services, information technology, engineering, sales, public utilities, health care, and local government). This mix adds to the richness of the educational experience as participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences to the programme.

In Semester 1 you will complete the Developing Personal and Managerial Effectiveness module.

The aim in this introductory part of the programme is to develop core personal effectiveness skills needed by managers in any organisational environment and by students at postgraduate level. The emphasis is placed on your developing the capabilities to reflect on your style and approach as a manager and leader. You will be introduced to the concept of continuous development, and you will focus on developing capabilities in specific areas including self management, communication, team work, problems solving, information technology and interpreting and communicating financial information, This will provide you with the foundation for the management of learning, self-development and action planning required throughout the programme.

And in Semester 2 you will study Developing Strategic Focus. During the course of this module you will explore the concepts of strategic management and leadership through the application of environmental and organisational analysis with the aim of sustaining and improving operational quality market position and customer satisfaction.

Finance and information technology skills developed in Semester One are further developed and applied in the consideration of the operational and strategic topics described above.

This module together with the module delivered in semester one, will equip you to develop a career in general management.

As our courses are reviewed regularly, the modules you choose from may vary from those listed here.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Learning methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, group work and case studies. Wherever possible, study is related to your own work experience and place of employment.

Each semester programme carries 30 credits involving approximately 300 hours of student effort. This includes approximately 50 hours of staff contact, normally delivered through weekly 4-hour teaching blocks with additional weekend skills workshops, with the remainder of the time devoted to reading and online activity. Each module is assessed individually, generally by written assignment, but also involving in class tests to assess finance and IT skills, and an online reflection on self development

Quality

The reputation of the Business School is underpinned through programme accreditations awarded by the Association of MBAs and EPAS, and through memberships of the Association of Business Schools and professional associations such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and the European Foundation for Management Development. The Business School is, therefore, widely regarded as one of the best within its peer group.

The Business School's programmes benefit from rigorous quality assurance procedures and regularly receive excellent feedback from external examiners, employers, students and professional bodies.

Career prospects

Once qualified students typically progress to more senior positions in their organisations. Some use the qualification to support a change in career direction.

Many students who graduate from Business School programmes realise significant career progression and go on to achieve high status in the industry of their choice.

The school maintains a rigorous and dynamic doctoral programme leading to the higher degrees of MPhil and PhD. Postgraduate students join a supportive, friendly and multicultural research environment.
