Overview
This exciting and dynamic MSc in Nursing Studies is offered as an online distance learning or on campus course. It is open to UK, EU and international nursing professionals who wish to undertake advanced postgraduate study with a premier academic institution that has close links with nationally and internationally recognised clinical settings and expert practitioners. The course is delivered by a team of lecturers and researchers with a wealth of practice and research experience and a rich track record of research publications in areas of relevance to nursing.
The course can be taken either full-time over 12 months or part-time over three years. There are two intakes: September (Semester 1) and January (Semester 2).
We have developed the course during the last three years and have been supported by colleagues in the wider university who have a national and international reputation with teaching and learning technologies. This has helped us design the course so that it can be delivered online at a distance and provide choice, flexibility and a quality experience for students.

Course content
This MSc in Nursing Studies is designed to raise your practice to an advanced level, enabling you to progress as a senior practitioner, educator, researcher or manager. You will develop your practice with confidence, knowing that it is based on the best available evidence to allow you to make effective nursing interventions.
The course covers modules in each of the following:
- mastering professional practice (compulsory)
- evidence-based practice (compulsory)
- health promotion (compulsory)
- leadership (compulsory)
- advanced research design (compulsory)
- dissertation (compulsory for MSc, triple module)
- infection prevention and control (optional)
- work-based learning (optional)
- independent study (optional)
- creating frameworks for learning (optional)
One optional module would be chosen from the above four to make up the 9 module MSc or 6 module PGDip. For the 3 module PGCert, you would have to do Mastering Professional Practice, Evidence-based Practice and Leadership. In addition, for the PG Dip, you would have to do all the compulsory modules (except the dissertation), plus one optional module.
Teaching, learning and assessment
The assessments by coursework are varied in style and include (but are not limited to) essays, critical reviews, case studies and virtual presentations. MSc students will also write a dissertation on a topic of their choice. Distance learning materials are provided to guide you during your studies; these include study guides, course readers and access to an interactive online learning environment.
On campus course
If you choose to enrol on the mixed-mode course, five modules will be delivered using a blended learning approach involving attendance at our Marston Road site in Oxford, and two modules will be delivered via distance learning.
Distance learning
The distance learning course provides exciting opportunities if you are unable to attend university full-time but want to study to an advanced level in a stimulating and dynamic online environment. In addition to accessing our virtual learning environment you will have the use of a range of technologies such as online real-time video and audio communication tools. This means that students can feel supported by a variety of staff including the libraries and learning technologists.
Career prospects
As a nurse, you are part of the largest single health care profession and you may be working in any area of the world. You are ideally placed to improve the quality and delivery of health care to patients and their families. There is considerable and compelling evidence about the difference nurses can make to the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and populations (Spilsbury and Meyer 2001, Cunningham 2004).
Free language courses for students - the Open Module
Free language courses are available to all full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students who are studying any course on our Headington (including Marston Road), Harcourt Hill or Wheatley Campuses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

Entry requirements
You must:
- Be a qualified nurse (equivalent to UK registered nurse) with up-to-date and current registration within your country of origin and be employed within current clinical nursing practice. You must have a minimum of one year's post registration experience either in the UK or in your home country.
- Normally hold a UK first degree or equivalent overseas degree from a reputable institution. If you do not hold a first degree or equivalent, you will be required to submit an assignment which will be taken into account as part of your application.
- Have reliable access to the internet, preferably through a broadband connection.
- Have good IT skills and be proficient in the use of the internet and online communication.
You can choose to enrol at either the PGCert, PGDip or MSc level. You can enter on the basis of your undergraduate degree and/or previous appropriate knowledge and experience. A framework is available for the Accreditation of Prior (Experience and) Learning (APEL and APCL), which awards credit appropriate to the individual’s background, qualifications and experience.
English language requirements
If your first language is not English, you must demonstrate that your level of English is appropriate for study at postgraduate level. We require an IELTS score of 6.5-7.0 overall, or equivalent.

International applicants will:
- need to apply early to allow enough time for obtaining visas if offered a place
- be asked to pay a deposit of £1,000 to secure a place on the course.

Credit transfer
Oxford Brookes operates the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). All postgraduate single modules are equivalent to 10 ECTS credits, double modules to 20 ECTS credits, and treble modules to 30 ECTS credits. A full master's course will carry 90 ECTS credits. More about ECTS credits.

All our courses adopt a student-centred approach to teaching and learning and are strongly focused on encouraging you to attain your full potential as lifelong learners.
There is a range of support mechanisms for students, such as academic advisers, who will facilitate your academic development, and student support co-ordinators, who provide a drop-in service for queries about any aspect of student life, covering both academic and personal welfare.

They also give advice on statistics and maths.
