The Postgraduate Centre at our Business School

The Postgraduate Certificate in Human Resource Management (CHRM) is the first year of study leading to the award of either a Postgraduate Diploma or MA in Human Resource Management. These programmes are aligned to the new (2010) Professional Qualification Framework of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). You can view the course structure here.

The CHRM programme is accredited by the CIPD to meet the requirements for its Advanced Certificate in HRM and access to Associate Membership of the Institute. On successful completion of the CHRM students can progress to either the Diploma or MA in HRM. Both awards provide the academic knowledge, skills and evidence to support applications for candidates to gain Chartered Membership of CIPD.

The CHRM programme is suitable for graduates and more experienced participants returning to study and provides the specialist HR skills and knowledge to support HR leaders and managers.

In detail

Course content

The CHRM contains two modules as follows:

Developing Personal and Managerial Effectiveness
This module creates a bridge into postgraduate study for working adults returning to study, often after a long break. It aims to make postgraduate study accessible, immediately relevant in the workplace and at the same time academically challenging. It embeds a programme of personal and managerial skills development within a rigorous framework of knowledge and understanding in relation to people management and development in today’s global work environment. Also embedded in the academic study of contemporary debates and research in relation to HRM and HRD is the development of academic study competences.

Human Resources in its Business and Legal Context
Human resource (HR) professionals and managers operate within increasingly complex and changing organisational and contextual circumstances. This module:

  • provides learners with an understanding of the principal internal and external environmental contexts of contemporary organisations and examines how organisations respond to these dynamic contexts and and how this affects people working in HR, and line managers with HR responsibilities
  • shows how managers and HR professionals in different types of organisation (small, large, national, global, public, private and third sectors) have opportunities and choices when taking organisational and HR decisions but also face constraints
  • gives consideration to the impact of different cultures on managerial decision making.

From the point of view of the HR professional a principal link between these environments and the individual employee and the employer is employment law: therefore this module explores this specific context in some detail.

As our courses are reviewed regularly, the modules you choose from may vary from those listed here.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The course is principally delivered through 12 weekly half-day and evening workshops. Workshops can involve tutor input, analysis of case studies, problem-solving activities, computer-based business simulations, presentations, analysis of data for decision making, and directed reading and research. Some skills development is best addressed in more intensive workshop modes outside the weekly session, and one full weekend plus two single day events are also provided. These will focus principally on:

  • team building
  • problem solving and time management
  • people management skill sets (eg interviewing, managing disciplinaries)
  • leadership and influencing skills
  • data handling and presentation skills using IT applications and statistical techniques.

Each module is assessed individually with a range of assessment methods used. These include individual assignments, group work, peer and self-assessment, and examinations.

Teaching staff are drawn primarily from the Department of Business and Management within the Business School. There are some contributions from specialists in other departments. Visiting speakers from business and industry, local government, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.
