Course types

Our wide range of postgraduate taught courses include master's degrees and postgraduate diplomas and certificates. Many postgraduate courses are also professionally accredited.

Master's degree (MA, MSc, MBA, MRes, EM, LLM, MArch, MEng)

Master's degree courses provide advanced specialised study and basic research training in a particular subject or profession and provide a good foundation for research degrees, such as a PhD or MPhil. Conversion master’s courses, such as the MSc in Computing, allow you to develop an area of expertise different from your first degree. Master of Research degrees (MRes) provide training in research for students wanting to study MPhil and PhD degrees.

Master's degree courses typically have two components, and last one year full-time (or two years part-time):

  • a taught component, including training in research methods;
  • a supervised dissertation/research project.

On many programmes, if you successfully complete the taught component but do not wish to undertake a dissertation or research project you may be eligible for the award of a postgraduate diploma in the subject of study.

Postgraduate diploma (PGDip)

Postgraduate diploma courses typically consist of the taught component of corresponding master's degree courses, although some are free-standing.  These courses aim to offer you greater in-depth knowledge of, and expertise in, your chosen subject area.  Successful completion of certain PGDip courses also confers eligibility for membership of professional bodies.  Successful PGDip candidates can go on to achieve a master's degree by undertaking a supervised dissertation or research project.

Postgraduate certificate (PGCert)

Postgraduate certificate courses typically consist of part of the taught component of corresponding master's degree courses, and are less comprehensive than PGDip courses. Postgraduate certificate courses offer the opportunity to undertake study at an advanced level and to deepen your knowledge in specific subject areas without having to undertake the full workload of a postgraduate diploma or master's degree.

Graduate Diploma

This diploma is designed for candidates with a first degree who want to obtain a degree in a different subject area.  We offer graduate diploma conversion courses in Anthropology, Law and Psychology.

Accredited courses

Many of our taught postgraduate courses also lead to professional accreditation, providing you with a qualification recognised by a professional body such as the Royal Town Planning Institute or Association of MBAs. For a complete list of accredited courses, search for 'accredited courses' in the course finder below. Also see our accreditation glossary.
