Laura Salisbury Jones, studied for an MSc in Real Estate Management

Oxford Brookes was my first choice when deciding where to study my postgraduate degree. The course offers a wide variety of modules which provide you with a strong foundation in all aspects of the property industry. The course really does prepare you for going into the workplace.

The tutors were a real inspiration

The support was exceptional especially when preparing for exams, interviews and applying for jobs. The tutors were a real inspiration - Nick French in particular, who introduced us to so many interesting aspects of the property market as well as key players in the industry.

I am currently on the graduate scheme at Savills in London. I still have ongoing connections with Brookes - I am on the OBREMS committee which is an alumni association for graduates who work in the real estate sector. This provides me with an excellent opportunity to maintain the friendships I made on the course as well as meeting other members within the property industry.

Our research has a first class reputation across subjects ranging from international land and property markets to sustainable
real estate and construction management. We were ranked fifth in the latest UK research power tables within Town and Country Planning as part of our submission from the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD) (RAE 2008).

Our taught courses are accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). Our courses deliver first-class employment opportunities: for example, students on our MSc in Real Estate Management have a 100% employment rate.

All of our academic staff are involved in academic research or professional consultancy work, so research expertise feeds directly into the teaching programme at all levels. Staff regularly secure research funding from the UK’s research councils, international organisations (eg the World Bank) and the European Union, as well as industry and professional bodies (eg RICS, IPF).

Oxford is an excellent place to study Real Estate and Construction. The mix of historic and modern buildings presents a rich environment for learning through site visits to projects involving both new build and challenging retrofitting work.

We work in partnership with a large number of leading real estate and construction firms carrying out projects in the city and surrounding areas. Many of these companies sponsor our students, for example, Mace, Turner and Townsend, Willmott Dixon and Wates. Firms including Cluttons, DT2, GVA Grimley, Savills, Knight Frank and King Sturge support our Real Estate courses with field trips, guest lectures and case study materials.

The close proximity to London allows us to take advantage of its world-class commercial property market.

We have strong links with other departments within Oxford Brookes including the School of Architecture and the Department of Planning as well as carrying out interdisciplinary work with other areas. There is also a thriving alumni society, the Oxford Brookes Real Estate Management Society, which offers studentships and grants as well as excellent networking opportunities.
