This course is run by the Business School

The global business world is rapidly changing. The BSc (Hons) Business course has been designed to fulfil the needs of practitioners and employers in a highly dynamic and volatile economic environment.

This course shares a common first year with the BA (Hons) International Business Management, BA (Hons) Business and Management and BSc (Hons) International Business, providing a firm foundation in both business and management. It is possible to change between these degrees after the first year. You can view the course structure here.

You'll gain a deep understanding of the complexity of the global environment and how international markets and competition interact, developing your strategic and financial awareness and the research and analytical tools necessary to make well-informed and persuasive business decisions.

Why Brookes?

The Oxford Brookes Business School is known internationally for its learning and teaching, evidenced by the achievement of top scores in the last quality review. We adopt an innovative approach to teaching, which helps the student learning experience to be vibrant and engaging. Our students develop skills in critical enquiry along with a firm grounding in business practice which, together, enable them to confidently take on the demands of graduate jobs in leading international businesses.

We are the only business school to host a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (in assessment) as well as the two national Higher Education Academy Subject Centres in business and management disciplines (Business, Management, Accounting and Finance, and Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism), putting us at the centre of business education in the UK.

Teaching, learning and assessment

We firmly believe learning should be exciting as well as challenging. You are encouraged to take an active approach to your studies through, for example, problem-solving classes, dragons’ den type assessments involving local employers, and working with actors to develop presentation skills. We want you to enjoy developing the skills you will need to succeed in the competitive business world.

The course uses active learning approaches such as seminar and workshop activities, discussions and problem-solving activities, rather than an approach focused solely on lectures and note-taking. The first year in particular will provide opportunities for you to identify areas of your learning where you need particular support. The distinctive learning approach of this course is enquiry-based learning, which emphasises the exploration of business issues and problems that are set in realistic contexts and allows theory to be examined through interesting and challenging situations.

Later in the course more emphasis is placed on acquiring subject knowledge, and compulsory modules will develop your autonomous learning skills and skills of reflection. The course aims to provide opportunities for you to work with business professionals, for example, using guest speakers and live cases from the business community.

In detail

Course content

We provide a broad-based knowledge of business in a research rich environment, where you learn from the staff who write leading textbooks on business and management, and whose considerable experience and links in industry make your experience dynamic and practice-based.

We focus on the development of independent study skills, encouraging you to further develop your skills of strategic decision making in your final year through independent research and by studying live business problems. The synoptic module reinforces and integrates the understandings you have gained and encourages you to self-manage and reflect on your learning.

You can undertake projects directly related to the workplace through the Consultancy Project or Entrepreneurship modules, where industry experts are involved in the assessment and, if you wish, you can undertake a dissertation with the support of a personal supervisor.

Wherever possible, we invite visiting speakers from a range of profit and not-for-profit organisations and external visits are incorporated into some modules. For example, previous visits on the Business of Sport and Entertainment module have included Twickenham Stadium, the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, The Old Vic Theatre, London, and the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon.

As we review our courses regularly, the list of modules you choose from may vary from the ones shown here.
