This rewarding course provides you with knowledge and skills in real estate management, and will prepare you for admission to an appropriate professional body, such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). As part of our partnership agreement with the RICS, graduates are exempt from the academic component of membership of the institution, so are one step closer to obtaining their professional qualification as a chartered surveyor.

Through the use of integrative modules (designed to bring together the threads from the various subjects you study in the first year), and a choice of specialisation within modules, the course allows you to combine your academic and professional interests in ways that open up potential career paths and extend your personal development.

The Department of Real Estate and Construction offers strong links with the property industry, an impressive research base and excellent standards of teaching expertise. Although most graduates go on to work in the property industry, the course also provides a solid foundation for those intending to take up roles in general management in other industries.

Why Brookes?

  • Our well-qualified staff use a wide range of interactive teaching methods, with additional input from visiting property professionals.
  • You’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, to help equip you for professional practice.
  • Your final year includes a unique Professional Practice Test, where you will apply your learning to real-life development projects in a city away from Oxford for a week.
  • Oxford Brookes has established a partnership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and graduates of the course meet the academic requirements for membership of the institution.
  • The department has an excellent employment record for its graduates and strong links with leading property development and investment companies, house builders and housing associations, who regularly recruit our students.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Our teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, group sessions, a virtual learning environment and individual study. The department's strong academic base is complemented by direct teaching input from practising property professionals from a range of organisations. A variety of textbooks, workbooks and related material support the teaching programme, including web-based learning resources (Brookes Virtual). Specialist staff are on hand to develop your skills in specialist software as an integral part of the course.

Assessment methods include coursework assignments, essays, class tests, oral presentations, group work and examinations. Online assessment, via Brookes Virtual, may include online quizzes, and also uploading essay-style coursework on to the virtual system.

A special feature of the course is the unique Professional Practice Test, a final-year module. This involves a week's project work away from Oxford where you will study the chosen city and development projects within it, completing group and individual tasks, as well as oral examinations. The tasks test your ability to integrate your expertise in different subject areas and apply it to real-world problems. Past locations have included Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol, Southampton, Cardiff and Liverpool.  The module will give you a flavour of the Assessment of Professional Competence which graduate surveyors must pass if they are to be admitted to membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and which is usually taken after about two years in practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, you will have:

  • an understanding of the principles, roles and purposes of real estate management and a recognition of its interdisciplinary nature
  • an exemption from the academic requirements of membership of RICS
  • the ability to use relevant critical, creative, intellectual and analytical skills to identify optimal approaches to practical problems
  • a reflective approach which enables you to learn from your experience and continue your education through independent learning
  • the ability to undertake research towards a defined goal in a real estate management context, and to synthesise the results of your own research and enquiries
  • a range of transferable skills, including communication (written, oral, visual and numerical), teamworking and the use of information technology.

In detail

Course content

The curriculum is comprised of six core subject areas, all of which are studied in Year 1:

  • valuation finance and investment
  • property management
  • planning and development
  • design, construction and appraisal of buildings
  • economics
  • law.

These subject areas continue in Years 2 and 3 of the programme. In each year of the course, you will take an intensive integrative module which aims to rehearse and build on the skills and theories you've developed to date in the other modules. Project work is an important part of the course, and in your final year you will complete a supervised dissertation on an approved property-related subject of your choice.

The department also has a joint Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)/Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) route. This is a combination of two programmes, the BSc (Hons) Real Estate Management and the Diploma in Planning, giving you the opportunity to qualify for dual professional body accreditation. It normally takes four years' full-time study to complete and brings together specific skills, problem-solving abilities and multiprofessional teamwork. Application to this programme is via the BSc (Hons) Real Estate Management.

Selection process

Part-time applicants should apply directly to the university.

Applicants will be required to attend an interview (usually between December and mid-March) before an offer is made. Offers and the level of offers are dependent on performance at interview and may be higher or lower than the typical offer above.

Generally we invite about 20 applicants to each interview session. Applicants are split into groups, usually of four or five, for a group exercise and interview, and a tour with some of our current students. In the group exercise we give applicants a scenario to discuss as a group before reporting back to the panel. The panel will ask follow-up questions on the topic and then some questions based on the personal statement on your UCAS form. The whole process generally lasts about three hours.

English language requirements

Please see the university's standard English language requirements.

English language requirements for visas

If you need a student visa to enter the UK you will need to meet the UK Border Agency's minimum language requirements as well as the university's requirements. Find out more about English language requirements.

How to apply

Full-time students should apply for this course through UCAS.

All applications should be made through UCAS. The deadline for receipt of applications by UCAS is mid-January. Late applications will not be considered unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The key to your application is your personal statement. In this we are looking for evidence of motivation and commitment. We want to know what interests you about the subject and why you want to study it. Evidence of relevant work experience is particularly useful and we also want to know what you do in your spare time.

After reading the personal statements and considering the predicted grades we decide who to invite to interview. Interviews take place in early December and then from the end of January until mid-March. We do not make offers without an interview.

Conditions of acceptance

When you accept our offer you agree to the conditions of acceptance. You should therefore read those conditions before accepting the offer.

Credit transfer

Oxford Brookes operates the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). All undergraduate single modules are equivalent to 7.5 ECTS credits and double modules to 15 ECTS credits. More about ECTS credits.
