Overview
This course is run by the Department of Sport and Health Sciences
Our highly popular Occupational Therapy (OT) course will equip you with the skills required to practise as a competent occupational therapist in a wide variety of environments.
Occupational therapy practice is concerned with enhancing the daily lives of individuals with a very broad range of physical, mental health or social needs. As an occupational therapist you will work with clients to improve their function, enabling them to fulfil the demands of their daily lives with greater satisfaction. You will work with people of all ages from all walks of life, in hospital, in the community, in their place of employment or in their home.
This course offers a student-centred approach to learning. It involves the integration of occupational therapy theory, practice, and components of the biological, behavioural, social and medical sciences. You’ll learn to critically assess the living skills and occupations of clients in order to enhance their performance within their unique environments. You will also develop the technical, practical, managerial and communication skills necessary to enter practice as a qualified occupational therapist.
If you already have a relevant bachelor's degree but would like to pursue occupational therapy as a career, we are pleased to offer a pre-registration master's course.

Teaching, learning and assessment
You will experience a range of different approaches to teaching and learning, including both traditional and experiential learning opportunities. In addition to lectures and seminars, you will learn through group work and self-directed study. IT plays an increasingly important role in health care courses and an extensive range of learning resources can be accessed through 'Brookes Virtual' - an online repository of lectures, handouts, information and learning exercises.
Throughout the degree, there is a range of assessments, such as skill-based assessments, coursework and exams. Each of your three practice placements will be assessed.
In health and social care no professional group works in isolation. Oxford Brookes teaches a very wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing (adult, children's and mental health), midwifery, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, physiotherapy and social work. You will share your learning with other health care students. This is a key component of the course, essential to developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of other roles you will encounter in practice.
All our courses adopt a student-centred approach to teaching and learning and are strongly focused on encouraging you to attain your full potential as a lifelong learner.

Year 1 modules provide you with a foundation in the knowledge and skills of occupational therapy and the relevant biological and behavioural sciences. You will also undertake two interprofessional modules. Learning through experience to integrate the theory and practice of occupational therapy is also a key part of the course. The placements you undertake will provide you with practical experience of the work of an occupational therapist.
In Years 2 and 3 you will take further occupational therapy modules, developing skills and knowledge in specific practice areas. Emphasis is placed on integrating theory with practice and on developing the skills to think like an occupational therapist. Also, on understanding and undertaking research. Further study with students from other professional fields will help you prepare for multi-disciplinary teamworking and develop self-management and organisational skills. Two placement opportunities in different practice areas will refine your practical and professional skills.
You can view detailed descriptions of some of the modules here.
