Arts and Humanities
Are you looking for a real intellectual challenge? Do you want to understand our society by looking at its past or the way it describes itself in art, literature or music? Are you an artist or performer who wants to build an academic foundation to help your creativity flourish?
Whatever your interest in the arts and humanities, a degree in this area will give you the chance to think more widely and deeply about some of today's biggest issues in the context of art, history, literature, music and philosophy.
An arts and humanities degree is a superb intellectual training, preparing you for a very wide range of careers, or it can provide the perfect beginning for a career as a performer or artist.
Why choose Oxford Brookes?
You'll join a group of departments that is home to world-class researchers and teachers. Read more…
We also have some of the best teaching quality assessment scores in the UK, as well as internationally important research centres – Brookes' History department, for example, received the top 5* rating, placing it in a small group of elite universities.
But there is far more to arts and humanities at Brookes, from our unique Poetry on the Bus project to our state-of-the-art electro-acoustic studios. The Brookes Institute for Historical and Cultural Research breaks down academic barriers creating new perspectives to inform our undergraduate courses. We have a flourishing Poetry Centre, fine art studios (open 24 hours a day, seven days a week) and excellent library and IT facilities.
Oxford is home to some of the world's greatest literary and cultural collections including the Ashmolean Museum, Modern Art Oxford and the Christ Church Picture Gallery. And every style of live music from orchestral and chamber music to jazz and rock is catered for too.
You can apply for access to the University of Oxford's Bodleian Library to support your undergraduate dissertation (or for music students, the University of Oxford's Music Library is available), and London's galleries, museums, libraries and music and performance venues are less than an hour away.
We have two professional authors working at Brookes as part of the Royal Literary Fund Fellowship Scheme. They offer writing support to all students including style and technique, organising thoughts and constructing essays, study skills and making the most of learning resources.
How we teach and how you'll learn
For some of our subjects we welcome those new to the discipline. Read more…
For example, in philosophy we'll introduce you to metaphysics, epistemology and ethics from the beginning.
Our academics carry out their own research as well as teach, so you'll hear about the latest thinking in your subject often before it's published.
Assessment of arts and humanities subjects takes many forms but all our degrees use coursework as the main form of assessment.
But that's not all, Brookes degrees are modular and subjects can be combined to allow you to customise your degree.
Your career prospects
Whatever their chosen area, our arts and humanities graduates have lively, questioning minds and the intellectual capacity to succeed in a wide range of careers. Read more…
These include publishing, journalism, marketing, political research, museum management and the civil service. We also offer a free, extra module in modern languages which could give you an edge in the job market. Our music and fine art graduates have become well established in their respective fields and many arts and humanities graduates go on to MAs and PhDs. Others take the Postgraduate Certificate in Education and go on to a career in teaching.

History
"I'm really lucky to be able to do a work placement module as part of my History degree – it's not something that's offered at many universities."
"So I can research and study and also gain an experience of realistic work conditions in a 'history' environment. I'm sure it will increase my research skills, and help develop better ways of working with others."
