Biological and Biomedical Sciences
How does the human body work at a cellular level? Is biotechnology changing our relationship with the natural world? Can we cure genetic disorders by replacing damaged genes with functional copies?
New discoveries and technological advances in the biological sciences are generating great excitement because of their implications for individuals and for society as a whole.
Molecular genetics and biotechnology, industrialisation and pollution, biodiversity loss and population growth all emphasise the impact of humankind upon the Earth and our efforts to direct and control our future through manipulation of agriculture, medicine and environmental systems.
If these critically important areas of science interest you, then choose one of our biological or biomedical sciences degrees.
Why choose Oxford Brookes?
From top quality facilities to excellent science work placements, Oxford Brookes has many advantages if you're interested in biological and biomedical sciences. Read more…
Our well equipped laboratories have state-of-the-art technology such as electron and laser confocal microscopes to study how cells function from the inside. Our links with organisations from Oxford teaching hospitals like the John Radcliffe, to research centres such as the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, as well as a wide range of businesses provide exciting work placements and great career prospects.
Our active research groups are exploring mechanisms of nicotine addiction, development of breast cancer, drug transport into cells, genetic damage induced by radiation and computer modelling of various cellular processes, including those involved in cancer treatment. And because research underpins our teaching, you gain the most up-to-date knowledge and skills.

Don’t worry about deciding straight away as our common first year allows you the flexibility to move between any of the degrees in the biological and biomedical sciences area. This gives you the freedom to shape your degree to suit your developing interests or needs. Unlike many universities, practical work remains central to a Brookes degree. Lectures and seminars combine with lab-based experiments/projects and work experience opportunities, allowing you to apply theory to a real situation. You will be taught by leading academics who are keen to involve you in their research.

"This subject isn't about studying – it's about trying to discover things. The amount of technology at Brookes is amazing. The degree is full of opportunities."
"Anyone interested in studying this area should choose a course with an industrial placement. When I came back to University I was so much more confident in the labs. And the experience in handling x-rays and radiation helped me get my part-time job in radiology support at the John Radcliffe hospital."
