Construction Management

"I've always been into building things and interested to see how it's all put together."

"Oxford's not just beautiful scenery, you can learn from it."

"Brookes is particularly good for construction. In our introduction we were taken round a few times to different buildings in Oxford and shown the architectural features... it's not just beautiful scenery, you can learn from it. My third year work placement was at top construction consultancy firm Gardner and Theobald in London, and I’ve got a job lined up with them for when I finish my degree."

We'll increase your ability to create solutions and to thrive on the challenges of rapidly changing environments.

We use a wide range of teaching approaches from traditional lectures, seminars and tutorials to practical work, studio-based teaching in our own purpose-built studio, demonstrations and site visits, role-play simulations, problem-solving exercises, group projects and more. Live case studies play a big part in how we teach – we have strong links with local authorities, developers and the leisure industry – and you'll see developments in Oxford and further afield through fresh eyes as they become part of your learning experience. Many of today's leading professionals visit the university to lecture, including architects such as double Stirling Prize winner Chris Wilkinson and 2007 RIBA Gold Medal winner Edward Cullinan.

Assessment on built environment courses includes combinations of coursework, laboratory and field practicals, class tests, oral presentations, group work and examinations. Many of our degrees use continuous assessment of project work to make sure that you are getting the most from your degree.

Work placements are a central part of your learning experience and you'll get the chance to put it into practice with a wide choice of opportunities tailored to suit you and your career goals. We also arrange visits and field trips, both in the UK and across the world and some courses include overseas exchanges – including Austria, Australia, Denmark, the USA and Canada.

Every year we host a careers fair attended by major employers who want to recruit Brookes' students.

In recent years architecture graduates from our BA courses have had a 100% employment rate and have gone on to work for some of the top names in the country, including Norman Foster, Nicholas Grimshaw and Zaha Hadid. Demand is especially high for all kinds of planners, including those in the growing leisure industry, and urban designers, due to large housing and regeneration projects such as the Thames Gateway development. Our real estate and construction graduates are employed across a range of fields and projects from restoration and conservation work to eco-build zero-carbon housing. Many of our students go on to work for the companies where they did their work placement.

Brookes is recognised by the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architects Registration Board, the Royal Town Planning Institute, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Chartered Institute of Building and the Association of Building Engineers. Built environment degrees will also give you exemptions from some of their professional examinations.
