Telecommunications (now Communication Networks)

"As well as the amazing technology, I really like the idea that telecoms brings people together. I’m especially interested in mobile phones and satellite communications. At Brookes you have everything you need to support you – the tutors are excellent and know lots of people in industry, so are able to give us useful contacts"

"Brookes has such an international atmosphere – it's one of the things I like best about."

"Oxford is really well placed for communications, with a number of the big names based in and around this area, as well as smaller companies like the one where I did my work placement. The city also has so much else to offer, and Brookes has such an international atmosphere – it's one of the things I like best about it."

Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Multimedia and Sound Technology

Do you enjoy inventing creative solutions?

Are you excited by how technology can help people to communicate better, work together, and express themselves? Are you interested in how to develop the next generation of media-intensive mobile computers, communications devices and broadcasting techniques?

Computing scientists and technologists invent the solutions that drive our world. The internet, virtual worlds, computer-generated special effects in films, and satellite navigation are just a few of the many products of computing and technology. Computer technology is, by far, the most flexible and powerful tool ever invented for science, engineering, business, and government.

By studying computing and technology, you can work in a field that has grown at an unprecedented speed, and continues to evolve each day.

Why choose Oxford Brookes?

Oxford Brookes is a great place to study computing and technology. Read more…

The locality has one of the highest concentrations of computing and technology firms in the UK, so our research partnerships and interactions with industry are hard to beat, and our computing and technology departments are based in a new £8 million centre which provides state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities on our Wheatley Campus.

We have invested in the latest technologies including a new digital broadcast studio and newsroom facility from Avid, the same quality as that used by Sky or ITN. The studio is home to Brookes TV which gives students an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills in broadcast technology, as well as journalism and presenting.

We have a range of research strengths, for example, the Oxford Brookes vision group is researching motion capture, object recognition, human motion analysis, segmentation and new view synthesis. We're working with Sharp on 3D displays and with Sony on interactive games for Playstation 3.

Like the rest of Oxford Brookes, we're a diverse community, welcoming students from all over the world and from many different backgrounds. Overall, Brookes has more than 4,000 students from overseas, representing over 100 countries.

How we teach and how you'll learn

You can follow various interests, such as media technology, communication networks, software engineering, web technology, business informatics, computer games, and more. Read more…

Or you can combine computing with other courses such as Music or Japanese.

You will acquire a deep understanding of computing and technology. An essential ingredient of this understanding is 'computational thinking' which is a way to solve problems and design systems, together with an understanding of human behaviour.

You will attend lectures, seminars, workshops, and laboratory sessions. You will use the latest equipment, and have access to 'supercomputer' clusters and our state-of-the-art TV studio. You will learn to program in one or more programming languages. This could be a special purpose language for controlling events in a 3D virtual world, or it could be any of a dozen computer languages widely used in business, industry and science. You will absorb a broad range of academic skills, as well as presentation and teamworking skills that will help you throughout your career.

In addition, you have the opportunity to spend a year on a placement with a company or organisation, learning about the world of employment and earning some money at the same time. Our students report that a placement experience is a source of inspiration.

Your career prospects

Demand by employers for graduates in computing and technology is exceptionally high. Employment prospects are excellent, and salaries are among the highest on offer to university graduates. Read more…

Our courses are professionally recognised by the big industrial players such as Cisco and Avid. Our close links with employers mean that many graduates are offered jobs by their work placement organisations.

Your degree will give you exemption from professional examinations if you apply for Chartered Engineer and Incorporated Engineer status after you graduate. Brookes is recognised for this purpose by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
