"Everyone knows how good Brookes' rowers are. It's very competitive, but we all have fun too. For me, studying this course here is the perfect combination."

Sport, Exercise and Nutrition

Can exercise halt the obesity epidemic? How should we address the ongoing problem of drugs in elite sport? What role does nutrition play in premiership football? How can sport and exercise shape children's education together with their physical and mental well-being?

Participation in sport is an important and enjoyable part of people's lives – for both the elite and recreational athlete. The government also recognises the key roles exercise and nutrition have to play in improving the nation's health.

Studying sport and exercise covers a wide range of disciplines from anatomy and physiology to politics and media, and gives you a chance to look in-depth at specialist areas such as health promotion, coaching children and managing elite performance.

As a graduate, you could make important contributions to society from coaching professional teams to advising government departments.

Students are encouraged to work with our Human Performance Unit, which assesses and improves the performance of elite athletes, and to get involved with the research and consultancy activities of our Clinical Exercise and Rehabilitation Unit which aims to enhance the function of patients with cystic fibrosis or a brain injury.

As well as covering a comprehensive range of sport and exercise topics, our courses include some interesting complementary areas such as video production, a useful coaching aid.

Brookes is also one of the UK's leading sport universities, producing Olympic medal winners and world champions as well as teams and individuals competing at all levels.

Our proximity to London means that we are going to be at the heart of preparations for the 2012 Olympics, bringing excellent work experience and career prospects to Brookes' students. Jenny Gray, Senior Tutor in Sport and Coaching, was an official for the Beijing Olympic Games, giving Brookes even more first-hand experience of competitive sport at the highest level.

This aims to give you the best start to your career. Most modules include lectures alongside a range of other learning methods, including seminars, tutorials, laboratory work, surveys and fieldwork. New ways of teaching such as podcasts are an integral part of our student experience.

We make full use of the Brookes Virtual Learning Environment where you can access course material specially written for the internet, build websites as part of your coursework, host materials for group presentations and take part in online learning activities like quizzes and self-assessment exercises.

You can combine the study of sports with a range of other subjects to create a degree to match your ambitions. Our Department of Sport and Health Sciences has taken flexibility a step further with a common first year that allows you to move easily between its three degrees in sport and exercise studies.

Brookes has partner universities across Europe, North America and Australia. You can choose to study abroad or opt for a one-year placement in the sports industry. Returning students say that the challenge of studying or working abroad broadens their experiences and improves career prospects.

Government initiatives are also leading to an increased demand for enthusiastic and well qualified graduates who understand the links between sport, exercise, nutrition and health.

Career opportunities include physiological testing of elite athletes, clinical trials research for the NHS and developmental coaching of emerging sports talent. Graduates from our courses have gone on to join the police, the armed services, to work on the Human Genome Project and health promotion activities with local and regional councils.

Some Brookes graduates go on to further study at MSc or PhD level. For example, our MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Nutrition, would make an ideal next step to further enhance your career. Other graduates enter the teaching profession after studying the one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
