Community Scholarships 2011-2012

We believe that there's far more to education than just doing well at exams. That's why Brookes has always recognised and rewarded non-academic kinds of achievements.

Not everyone gets top grades, but we find that students with more purpose in life also have the potential to really succeed at university. As we'd like to encourage a wide range of students to apply to Oxford Brookes, we've introduced Community Scholarships.

These are worth £1,000 for the first year and £500 per year for two subsequent years. This money doesn't have to be paid back as long as you complete your course.

Who is eligible?

You must be at a state-maintained secondary school or college of further education in Oxfordshire, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire or Berkshire. If you are at Brooklands College, Solihull College, Swindon College or New College, Swindon then you are also eligible.

You must have firmly accepted a place on either a full time three or four year degree course or a foundation degree course at our partner colleges and demonstrate one or more of the following criteria:

  • Successful role model to other students within the school
  • Commitment to study
  • Potential to succeed
  • Overcoming of personal or social difficulties

STEM Scholarship

As part of the Community Scholarship Scheme, Oxford Brookes is offering a small number of scholarships for those who are applying specifically for courses in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. These scholarships are worth £1,000 for the first year and £500 for two subsequent years.

If you are eligible for a Community Scholarship and applying to study a course in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, you can elect to be considered for a STEM Scholarship. Electing to do this does not preclude you from consideration for a non specialist Community Scholarship Award.

Note: successful applicants will only be entitled to receive one award.

If you are a winner of the Science Oxford - Science Apprenticeship Challenge please make this clear on your Scholarship application form.

How do I apply?

To apply for either a Community Scholarship or a STEM scholarship, you must complete a nomination form, which includes a reference from your school or college. Please send this form to:
The Community Scholarship Administrator,
UK Marketing,
Directorate of Corporate Affairs,
Oxford Brookes University,
Headington Hill site,
Oxford,
OX3 0BP.

Nominations must have reached the university by  May 2011 at the latest. All applicants will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible after this date.

Download the nomination form (Word document).

When will I receive my scholarship

Payment will be made on in December 2011 and March 2012.

We will pay your scholarship directly into the same bank account that you receive your Student Loan and / or Brookes Bursary into. You must be eligible for national student support and have consented to share your information with us, in order for us to be able to award your scholarship.

Does the money have to be paid back?

No, this money does not have to be paid back as long as you complete your course.

Further details

Community Scholarships recognise and reward applicants from the region who have a demonstrable ability to meet the offer threshold, who are role models within their schools, are committed to their studies, have overcome personal or social difficulties with success, or a combination of any, or all four.

  1. The regional participation scholarship is available to all schools and colleges within the university's Guaranteed Offer (GO) Scheme, including Associate College Partners and all state-maintained secondary schools and colleges of Further Education in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.
  2. Community Scholarships are only available to applicants who are currently studying at a qualifying school or college or who have taken a Gap Year and have firmly accepted a place on either a full time three or four year degree course or a foundation degree course at our partner colleges. Applicants who have already studied at another University will not be eligible except in exceptional circumstances.
  3. One scholarship will normally be available to each school or college. The school or college will be responsible for nominating or refereeing self-nominated students for the award following firm acceptance of the university's offer. Schools and colleges can nominate or referee an eligible student for a STEM scholarship, in addition to any non-specialist Community Scholarship applications they may submit or support.
  4. The nomination is entirely at the discretion of the school. Schools may seek advice from the university on individual cases and/or use discretion in assessing the eligibility of potential candidates depending on personal circumstances.
  5. In circumstances where there are equally deserving applicants from one school or college, the university may award additional scholarships. The university will therefore reserve a small number of scholarships for this purpose each year.
  6. The scholarship will be awarded at a rate of £1,000 for the first year and £500 per year for two subsequent years, for full time degree students, including degree and foundation degree programmes delivered through our partner colleges.

Conditions of the award

  1. Nominees must hold UK citizenship (a UK passport).
  2. Scholarships will be terminated in cases when students are found to be in breach of the Student Conduct Regulations and have been subject to, and found guilty by, a disciplinary process which in the judgement of the University would warrant withdrawal of the scholarship.
  3. Normally scholarships will be terminated if students fail or resit elements of their programmes without evidence of mitigation, presented to and accepted by, the relevant academic school.
  4. Payment of the scholarship will cease from the date the student leaves the university.
  5. Scholarships are available to students enrolled on 3 or 4 year degree courses and foundation degrees at our partner colleges only.  This must be their first degree.
  6. In circumstances when a student changes his/her mode of study or programme to one which falls outside the eligible criteria, the university will reserve the right to seek repayment of the scholarship in full.
  7. The scholarship is available to students studying the Nursing Diploma.
  8. Students must be in attendance on the 1 December and 1 March to be entitled to each instalment.
  9. This applies to 2011-2012 entrants only
