Frequently asked questions - postgraduate students

Please see the various sections below for the answers to some questions that are commonly asked by postgraduates about financing their studies.

I am a new applicant to the University - how do I pay my course deposit?

You will be sent a deposit payment form from your course administrator with your offer letter. This deposit form will detail how you may make payment - either by a bank transfer directly to our bank account or by credit card.

I am a new postgraduate student at the University - how do I enrol?

You will be sent enrolment instructions in the summer detailing how you can enrol. The instructions will include a statement of what your fees are and how you can pay them. As a new student, you will need to visit the University during week 0 to complete your academic enrolment. However if you have provided the information on paying your fees, the process will be a lot simpler and quicker.

I am a continuing postgraduate student of the University - how do I enrol?

All students must re-enrol to the University at the beginning of each academic year. During the summer vacation you will be sent information from the University about how you can do this. The usual options are on your Personal Information Portal, by post, or in person.

Please remember even if you are going on placement in the next academic year you MUST re-enrol at the University.

Can I complete my financial enrolment on the web?

Yes, if you are a new student and you have received enrolment instructions including information about financial enrolment online. Please go to your Personal Information Portal (PIP) and log on as instructed in your instruction booklet sent with your enrolment information.

If you are a continuing student you can fully re-enrol on PIP.

Can I pay my tuition fees in instalments in 2012/13?

Tuition fees can be paid for in full at the start of the academic year, or in two 50% instalments. The first instalment would be due in September 2012 and the second instalment due in January 2013.

Information about how you can pay your tuition fees is sent to all students with their enrolment information during summer 2012, and includes exact instalment dates.

When do I pay my tuition fees?

At least one session of tuition fees must be paid before you can fully enrol. You can log on to the web enrolment facility to pay your fees.

Please note that even if you give us payment details early, we do not take your first payment until one week before September enrolment.

If you are a continuing student, your due dates are on your Course Fee Statement on your Personal Information Portal (PIP). Should you have any queries regarding this, please contact finance-fees@brookes.ac.uk.

Can I see my financial enrolment on the web?

If you are a fully-enrolled student you will be able to see your "Course Fee Statement" on your Personal Information Portal (PIP). This statement will show what you have paid, when your next payment is due and how we think we are collecting the payment.

Your Course Fee Statement will also highlight any outstanding amounts and provide details of how to contact the Student Finance Team about your payment. You can also pay your tuition fees online, just click on the 'Make Payment' button on your Course Fee Statement.

How do I find out if I am classed as Home or Overseas for fees purposes?

You may be entitled to pay the lower 'home' student fee for your studies if you can prove you:

a) are an EU national or the child of an EU national, and

b) have lived in the European Economic Area (EEA) as an ordinary resident for 3 years before 1st September, 1st January or 1st April (whichever is nearest the start of your course) and have not been living in the EEA mainly for the purposes of full-time education.

If you have taken a short break in your residence or have worked outside the EEA for a time, this may not break your 'ordinary residence' in the EEA. If your country has recently joined the EU, it will be treated as if it had been part of the EEA for this 3 year period.

If you are unsure, please contact finance-fees@brookes.ac.uk or the International Student Advisory Service. For further information please visit the UKCISA website.

Which currency should I pay my fees in?

All monies paid to the University should be paid in Pounds Sterling. The University regrets that it cannot accept any other currency.

How does my sponsor pay my tuition fees?

When you financially enrol you will be asked how your fees are to be paid. If you have a sponsor (such as your LEA / SLC / employer or a commercial or charitable organisation) who is paying your fees, please provide an official letter of sponsorship from them. The letter should include:

  • the invoice address
  • name of the student, and
  • the amount of sponsorship.

We will then invoice them for the full fees, giving 30 days to pay. Sponsors do not have the option of paying in instalments.

Please note that if your sponsor fails to pay your fees, you will be liable.

Please note that your parents, family members or friends who may be paying your tuition fees are not classed as sponsors.
