Doctoral Training Programmes and other funding for Research

Research studentships within the university are offered from time to time.

In 2009 we introduced five new interdisciplinary Doctoral Training Programmes: Children and Young People: Psychological, Educational and Health Perspectives Global Politics, Economy and Society Intelligent Transport Systems Urban Futures Life Sciences These are funded to provide full-time studentships, and offer an exciting opportunity to be part of a team of excellent researchers working in areas that have a real impact on people's lives. When available, studentships are advertised in the national press or on the Graduate Office website. Other help and advice can be found on the Graduate Office website or you can phone them on +44 (0)1865 484244 or email rd-enquiries@brookes.ac.uk.

Public funding

This section includes details of all Research Council funding for postgraduate study in the UK.

Public funding bodies
Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) tel: +44 (0) 117 987 6500
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) tel: +44 (0) 1793 413200
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) tel: +44 (0) 1793 413000
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) tel: +44 (0) 1793 444000
Medical Research Council (MRC) tel: +44 (0) 207 636 5422
Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) tel: +44 (0) 1793 411500
Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) tel: +44 (0) 1793 442000

The research councils provide various types of funding for postgraduate study, including the following:

  • advanced course studentships for taught master’s courses, usually of one year’s duration
  • research master’s training awards
  • standard research studentships for PhD or MPhil students on programmes of up to three years full-time or five years part-time.

How to apply for public funding

ESRC accept some applications for studentships from individual students, but the other Research Councils award studentships on a quota basis to particular academic departments at Brookes that have been recognised as providing the required standard of research training.

For more information on studentships and their availability, contact the relevant academic department.

Alternatively contact the Research Councils themselves, or scan the academic press for advertised studentships:

  • Times Higher - Fridays
  • Education Guardian - Tuesdays
  • Nature
  • New Scientist.

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

Funding opportunities in the arts and humanities at Oxford Brookes University are available through the AHRC Postgraduate Studentships Schemes.

Applicants must note that in 2009, the AHRC changed the way in which it offers funding to arts and humanities postgraduate students who are studying in the UK. Funding for the Research Masters, Professional Masters and Doctoral degrees is now available through the AHRC Studentship Competition.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

The ESRC awards studentships by a quota system through a 1+3 award which funds a one-year research training master’s course that is linked to a three-year doctorate programme. Master’s courses are not funded separately. Awards can be made for a +3 award which covers the three-year PhD award only, but strict regulations are applied to the acceptance of prior research training provision. The +3 awards are allocated through an open competition system.

Awards are only made to outlets considered acceptable by the ESRC. A list of approved courses and institutions can be viewed on the ESRC website. Approach the course tutor directly and well in advance of the closing date of 2 May.

EU and EEA students

Nationals of European Economic Area (EEA) countries (i.e. EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) may be eligible for a fees-only award from the Research Councils or AHRC.

For more guidance, see UKOSA Guidance Notes for Students: Course Fees and Grants: EEA Students, available from British Council offices, or consult the relevant Research Council postgraduate funding guide.

NOTE: Nationals of European Union (EU) countries normally pay ‘home’ fees, i.e. fees at the same level as UK students.

Other sources of funding

Educational trust funds and charities

There are a number of charities, trusts and foundations which award partial funding for study. Competition for these awards is getting increasingly tough. In order to succeed in getting support, you must assure the charity or trust that you have exhausted all other sources of funding and that you fit in with specific eligibility criteria. You should normally plan your application at least a year in advance. It is rarely possible to get help at short notice.

Useful publications on the various trusts and charities include:

  • The Grants Register - the Complete Guide to Postgraduate Funding World-wide. Published by Macmillan.
  • The Directory of Grant-Making Trusts and The Directory of Small Grant-Making Trusts. Published by the Charities Aid Foundation.

Sponsorship by employers

Employers may fund vocational and professional training courses as part of career development. Information on sponsorship opportunities at a company is usually available from the company’s personnel department.

For Health and Social Care programmes, the administrator can supply details of funding opportunities.

Self-funding

Some postgraduates fund themselves through their studies with a combination of part-time jobs, loans, savings, etc. This can work well, but you must be realistic in calculating your costs before embarking on your studies.

Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE)

The Institute of Electrical Engineers provide a range of postgraduate scholarships for taught and research degrees. Applicants are normally expected to be IEE members and the closing date is usually mid-October. Further information can be found on the IEE website.

Teacher Training Student Finance

Your LEA will provide more information about available bursaries, grants and maintenance loans. They can also provide a free copy of the information booklet Financial Support for Students. Alternatively you can contact the DfES’s free information line on 0800 731 9133.

Postgraduate Teacher Trainees

Home students and EU students resident within the European Economic Area (EAA) attending an accredited initial teacher training course will receive one of the following non-taxable bursaries:

  • £9,000 for trainees in physics, chemistry, engineering and mathematics
  • £6,000 for trainees in biology, combined/general science and foreign languages.

The training salary is paid monthly over 9 calendar months from the start of study (September). For further information, please see the Training and Development Agency for Schools website or the Graduate Teacher Training Registry website.

MBA Loan Scheme

The Association of MBAs (AMBA) administers a Business School Loan Scheme to assist UK students studying for an MBA. Loans can cover tuition fees and living expenses. You can borrow up to two thirds of your pre-course gross annual salary, plus tuition fees for each year of full-time study. For more information visit the AMBA website.

Funding information

For information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit the Directgov website or call them on 0800 100 900.
